The planet is changing rapidly, necessitating urgent environmental solutions. Dr. Bertocchini, initially researching embryo development, expanded her work into bioremediation.

She discovered that *Galleria mellonella* larvae, commonly known as wax worms, can rapidly biodegrade polyethylene (PE), the world's most produced and resilient plastic. This unique speed, faster than any other known biological method, is thought to stem from the larvae's natural ability to consume wax, a complex molecule similar to PE.

George Shenusay, an environmental science student at UCLA, leads a research team investigating mealworms' ability to consume plastic. His passion for sustainability began after accidentally breeding thousands of mealworms in middle school.
