U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro talks about how HUD helps rebuild communities after natural disasters. After Hurricane Sandy, HUD shifted from just helping communities rebuild the way they were before, to showing communities how to rebuild to be resilient for the future. "Our hope is that through the investments that we're making now and the example that these communities that are participating in Rebuild By Design in the National Disaster Resilience Competition the example that they're setting will set best practices that are then adopted by states throughout our country," said Secretary Castro. Our health, safety and prosperity are threatened unless policymakers and businesses take immediate action to respond to and reduce climate risk. This panel will highlight innovative public-private solutions and discuss how businesses, governments and communities can work together to become more resilient.

In Klaus Jacob's first video interview (filmed 6/19) after the release of the much discussed “Resilient New York” report, he talks about defining resilience, flood risk, managed retreat, intergenerational justice, and why NYC's climate plan is shortsighted. The climate projections (flood zones, sea level rise) used in the report stop at 2050, but the city's planning & construction need to consider risks beyond that date.

Klaus Jacob, research scientist at Earth Institute's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, warned of New York's vulnerabilities to severe storm flooding long before Sandy and has emerged as a central figure in discussions about post-Sandy NYC.

What will it take to build the future we want? In September 2011, over 50 leaders from around the world convened at Ecotrust in Portland to share stories of challenges and hope for building a resilient future.

Raz Mason addresses the personal framework of resilience, and its relationship to sustainability.  She is a chaplain; creator of Warrior Wheel Training for people in high stress environments, especially those in the military and public safety; and founder of Mason Consulting, which focuses on training and coaching. Her work as a chaplain resident at the Portland VA Medical Center, experiences in Navy and Army officer training programs, and professional background in domestic violence agencies reflect her commitment to working with individuals and families from high stress occupations and environments. She holds an MDiv degree from Harvard Divinity School, an MA in Pastoral Studies from Seattle University, and a BA degree in mathematics from Bryn Mawr College.
