In this video, we share how coral reef restoration can be transformed by using a nature-inspired healing process that helps climate change-resilient corals grow up to 50x faster. The planet has lost more than half of its living coral since 1950, a result of climate change, ocean acidification, overfishing, and pollution. Coral farming is proven to help restore reefs, but standard ocean-based farms are limited in scale, species diversity, and geography, and they are not tailored to enhance corals’ resilience against climate change. Learning from corals’ natural healing processes through micro fragmentation, associated with on land-based farms, the startup Coral Vita grows climate change-resilient corals up to 50 times faster than in nature and restores dying reefs around the world. Conventional substances used to make our cosmetics, fabrics, paints, and packaging bright and colorful often include metal or oil-derived ingredients. For example, the most common pigment, titanium dioxide, causes a white coloration and is used in products from toothpaste to paper. Titanium dioxide has recently been recognized as a carcinogen and banned from food and pharmaceutical products in the EU. Furthermore, many pigments are mined in areas with high incident rates of human rights abuses, and where water is scarce. There are some bio-derived alternatives, but none have been able to compete at cost… until Sparxell. Sparxell has developed the first environmentally sustainable, non-toxic pigments, glitters, sequins and films. Inspired by structural color found in the marble berry, their patented manufacturing technique transforms cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) into uniformly reflective, highly dispersible particles with state-of-the-art performance. However, there's hope in the form of cellulose, an eco-friendly alternative derived from plants and bacteria. Scientists at Cellugy are pioneering the use of bacteria found in fermentation to produce cellulose at scale for cosmetics and personal care products. This natural substance not only offers a safe alternative to plastic-based ingredients but also boasts the ability to trap water, oil droplets, vitamins, and pigments, providing effective skincare solutions while reducing our reliance on harmful plastics.
