As Portland revitalizes its Old Town/Chinatown, a neighborhood home to two National Historic Districts, there is renewed interest in preserving its architecture and reusing historic buildings. This panel will address the challenges of redeveloping these structures, explore better financial tools and incentives, suggest in-fill considerations, and discuss streamlining processes to attract private investment and restore buildings to full service.

U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro discussed HUD's role in post-disaster community rebuilding. Following Hurricane Sandy, HUD's approach evolved from simply restoring communities to their prior state, to guiding them in building resilience for the future.

During this gathering, the Original People of Turtle Island (North America) formally established their leadership. The event also honored spiritually guided Earth stewardship leaders and youth completing rites of passage, inviting people of all cultures to participate and make offerings to the Water.

On January 9, 2013, First Nation Anishnabe Elder Dave Courchene of Turtle Lodge delivered a statement at the Elders Ceremony in Ottawa. This address was published the following day.

Known as Nii Gaani Aki Inini (Leading Earth Man), Elder Courchene is a respected teacher devoted to Indigenous knowledge. Since 1992, he has served as a UN Wisdom Keeper, advising on spirituality and sustainable environmental approaches.

Courchene founded Turtle Lodge in 2002, an internationally recognized center for learning, healing, and sharing. He continues to promote peace, recently sharing the stage with the Dalai Lama. Further details are available here.

As the founding document of the David Suzuki Foundation, it articulates the organization's core values. It presents a vision for planetary survival through a "new politics of hope," emphasizing connection and interdependence for the future of Earth.

At the TED

At the TED conference in Vancouver, Michael Murphy, co-founder and CEO of MASS Design Group, discussed architecture's transformative power. Drawing from his father's cancer journey, he highlighted how the built environment can impact community health and wellbeing. Murphy showcased humanitarian projects such as the Butaro Hospital in Rwanda and the GHESKIO Cholera Treatment Center in Haiti.

He posed a key question: "What more can architecture do?" This led his firm to consider how projects could create jobs, source regionally, and invest in community dignity.
