During Climate Week in New York City, WECAN held a virtual public event on September 26, 2024, titled “Transforming Global Economies: From Extraction to Regeneration in a Just Transition.”

Global women leaders shared insights on a Just Transition and innovative economic models, including community-led initiatives, feminist economics, Indigenous wisdom, and traditional practices of reciprocity with the Earth. This dynamic discussion highlighted a clear path to a thriving, socially just, and ecologically enriching future for all.

Ari Matusiak is CEO of Rewiring America, a nonprofit dedicated to electrifying 121 million U.S. households. His work addresses the fact that 42% of energy emissions originate from home decisions

Ari Matusiak is CEO of Rewiring America, a nonprofit dedicated to electrifying 121 million U.S. households. His work addresses the fact that 42% of energy emissions originate from home decisions like heating, cooking, and driving, aiming to launch a nationwide electrification movement.

He is also Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Purpose Venture Group, an advisory firm building community-centered ventures to combat climate and economic inequality. Matusiak brings nearly a decade of executive leadership in renewable energy and household electrification.

Previously, Ari served in the Obama White House as Special Assistant to the President, focusing on economic policy and private sector engagement. He is also Co-Founder and Chairman of Young Invincibles, a national nonprofit. Learn more about TEDx events here.

Arnis Sauka, a professor and director at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, is a leading expert on the shadow economy. His extensive research, involving methodology development and impact measurement, reveals its profound complexity. Sauka's work highlights the nuanced nature of the shadow economy, challenging negative perceptions by showing it can even have beneficial aspects.

Sauka's applied research includes collaborations with organizations like the OECD and European Commission, with findings published in leading journals and books. He co-authors the annual Shadow Economy Index for the Baltic Countries and authors the FICIL Sentiment Index. He has also held management and consultancy roles and is a frequent media commentator.

The Women's Earth and Climate Network (WECAN) hosted the Assembly from June 23-28, 2025. It united over 125 grassroots and frontline women leaders, global advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries. Across 25 panels, participants presented diverse visions and strategies to accelerate a transformative path toward a healthy and just world.
