Conservation Talks feature short clips from leading minds in conservation. In this installment, Dr. Jane Lubchenco, the first female administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), discusses what she sees as the biggest challenge facing conservation science in a rapidly changing world.

Dr. Lubchenco's rare resumé includes serving as the first female president of the International Council for Science, president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Ecological Society of America, and a member of the National Science Board. She is also a Distinguished Professor of Zoology at Oregon State University, with academic residencies at institutions like Stanford and Harvard.

Dr. Gabby Wild's new National Geographic Kids book, "Wild Vet Adventures: Saving Animals Around The World," takes young readers on a global journey. She explores diverse creatures—from lions to tarantulas—covering their anatomy, behaviors, diets, and the challenges they face, emphasizing human-animal relationships and shared habitats.

A renowned wildlife veterinarian, Dr. Wild is also known from Animal Jam Classic. Her collaborations include the World Wildlife Fund, National Geographic, and Jane Goodall Institute. When not traveling, she works as an emergency vet surgeon. Dr. Wild holds a DVM from Cornell, an MPH from Minnesota, and is a published genetics researcher.

She co-produced "A PASSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY" and wrote, directed, and produced "THE GREENEST BUILDING," which aired on over 250 PBS stations. Her film "OUR VOICE, OUR WORLD, OUR FUTURE" won the Best of the Northwest Community Empowerment Award. She has also directed five short narrative films and received screenwriting awards.

In 2007, Rhiannon Tomtishen and Madison Vorva founded Project ORANG (Orangutans Really Appreciate and Need Girls Scouts). They discovered that palm oil, a key ingredient in Girl Scout cookies, contributes significantly to orangutan habitat destruction.

This revelation prompted them to campaign for the Girl Scouts to replace palm oil with an eco-friendly alternative. Partnering with Rainforest Action Network, they co-authored a petition that generated over 70,000 emails to the Girl Scouts headquarters. Both are admirers of Jane Goodall.
