Energy History: The fossil fuel revolution is usually rendered as a tale of historic advances in energy production. In this perspective-changing account, Christopher F. Jones instead tells a story of advances in energy access—canals, pipelines, and wires that delivered power in unprecedented quantities to cities and factories at a great distance from production sites. He shows that in the American mid-Atlantic region between 1820 and 1930, the construction of elaborate transportation networks for coal, oil, and electricity unlocked remarkable urban and industrial growth along the eastern seaboard. But this new transportation infrastructure did not simply satisfy existing consumer demand—it also whetted an appetite for more abundant and cheaper energy, setting the nation on a path toward fossil fuel dependence.

Henry Miller argues that local efforts to adapt to and ameliorate climate change require two essential guidelines. First, we must identify and understand how our local context as a living hydrographic system (watershed), is integrated with ecological, economic, social and political subsystems. This allows us to develop planning and management strategies that address how people's lives interact with their natural environment. Second, we must use a simple and clear language to communicate with local stakeholders, in order to educate, motivate, and finally, to generate options for decision making in the short term. Henry Miller has been working for more than twenty years in the Mexican countryside interacting directly with the rural and indigenous population, serving as an intermediary between cultures, representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations, gathering information and transferring knowledge related to community development, food production and sustainable management of natural resources. He is currently the director of the non-profit El Maíz Más Pequeño whose mission is to contribute to the development of Mexico through the promotion of adaptive governance, education for life and ecological territorial management in the face of climate change. Between 2016 and 2019, he was the coordinator of the project Watersheds, People, Water and Climate Change: adaptation processes in the Támbula Sub-Basin.
