Scott Harrison discusses his nonprofit organization charity: water and how sustainability is the key to bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries. The organization’s public donations directly fund water project costs, and they prove every dollar using photos and GPS coordinates on Google Maps. In 14 years, with the help of more than 1 million donors worldwide, charity: water has raised over $496 million and funded over 59,000 water projects in 29 countries. When completed, those projects will provide more than 11.6 million people with clean, safe drinking water. To-date, Google.org and Googlers have donated over $8M to advance the mission of charity: water. 785 million people live without clean water. That’s nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide. The majority live in isolated rural areas and spend hours every day walking to collect water for their family. Not only does walking for water keep kids out of school and take up time that parents could be using to earn money, but the water often carries diseases that make them sick. When a community gets access to clean water, it can improve health, increase access to food, grow local economies, and help kids spend more time in school. charity: water works with local experts and community members to find the best sustainable solution in each place, whether it’s a well, a piped system, a BioSand Filter, or a system for harvesting rainwater. With every water point they fund, their partners coordinate sanitation and hygiene training and establish a local Water Committee to help keep water flowing for years to come. Scott Harrison spent almost 10 years as a nightclub promoter in New York City before leaving to volunteer on a hospital ship off the coast of Liberia, West Africa as a photojournalist. Returning home to New York City two years later, he founded the non-profit organization charity: water in 2006. Turning his full attention to the global water crisis, he created public installations and innovative online fundraising platforms to spread international awareness of the issue. Scott has been recognized on Fortune Magazine’s list of 40 Under 40, Forbes’ Impact 30, and Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business. What often overlooked objects or ideas have a larger impact on you than you thought? Plants are more human than we like to think so, and they affect us in numerous capacities. Giavanna (Gia) Figlioli is a senior at South Warren High School. Her interests include collecting vintage records, dabbling in photography, and hanging out with her cats. She is a third year varsity swimmer for the South Warren Swim and Dive Team. Gia enjoys learning about all things science and would like to pursue a college degree and career in science. She plans on eventually pursuing a doctorate in her chosen field. She loves to collect and care for plants, and she is always ready to learn more about her passions and the world around her.
