Have you ever gotten yourself to a point of stress or discomfort whenever you hit the road in your vehicle riding through the city, especially during peak hours? In Jakarta, this feeling is not only experienced by motorists, but also pedestrians trying to escape the chaos to the less than ample sidewalks. Even then, they often become the victim of endangering activities of people in their vehicles, such as motorcycles to avoid traffic, as well as street vendors. Alfred Sitorus, an avid cyclist, humanist, commuter, and one of the founders & initiators of the Jakarta Pedestrian Coalition, will discuss his efforts to protect the home of the pedestrians and avoid its misuse, the sidewalk. Alfred and his peers founded the coalition back in 2011, which arises from the question of ‘who does the sidewalk actually belong to?’. Ever since, the coalition has set their goals as to return the sidewalks to its rightful owners. Every year, more than 90,000 tons of plastic are being produced into millions of LEGO bricks... 99% of the people we know have LEGO either in the playroom of their children or in the attic, where it is stored for the next generation of LEGO enthusiasts. It is called the most sustainable toy because generations keep it and pass it on. Talk about CHANGE! BUT, how are you going to make sure that the world's largest tire manufacturer, which processes tons of plastic into bricks, is, next to the already durability of their toys, even more environmentally friendly by 2030! Nelleke spent the first 18 years of her life in Rotterdam. She grew up in an environment where change was commonplace: in the centre of the once heavily battered city there was still a large area of sand that slowly transformed into a residential environment that radiated ambition. She learned the meaning of the phrase 'stop talking, start working'. Nelleke went to study at the Technical University of Delft, where she was to be found during the day in the lecture halls and the laboratory, and in the evenings in the company of her fraternity friends. After her PhD dissertation, she was given the opportunity to work in the US, at a company 15 miles away from The Big Apple. There she learned how to design chemical processes and how to test them in the laboratory and on a pilot scale. She also saw the power of diversity in the big city of New York. With the arrival of the internet and high tech hype at the beginning of this century she got the opportunity to work in a high tech start-up called Avantium Technologies located in Amsterdam. In the more than 13 years with that company she learned even more about the chemical industry and how people can collaborate best on technical challenges. In those years she gave birth to two beautiful sons who, just like her, are curious about the world and people. In 2014 she was given the opportunity to work at a dream job at The LEGO Group, where she and her team are working on the materials required for today's stones and the materials that will need to be used for the stones of the future. Viral Shah, an Indian Computer Scientist, brings into light how computation can work towards solving some of the world’s biggest climate change issues. Bringing a fresh insight to getting involved in the social impact space through the Julia Language, his very own creation, Viral Shah, who is the co-founder and CEO of Julia Computing, brings forward opportunities through which students can get involved in making a difference and following their ambitions in tandem. Emphasizing on the steady growth of the Technology Industry, his talk strongly conveyed the importance and necessity of computation to solve global issues, motivating students to take a leap of faith and delve deeper into their interests within the industry. Viral Shah is an Indian computer scientist and is the co-founder and CEO of Julia Computing. Albeit a common belief that productivity and performance do not function in tandem in programming, he defied the odds through co-creation of the Julia Language, a high impact language that is now widely adopted all across the world. He was actively involved in the Aadhaar Project, which provided Indian residents a 12-digit unique identity number based on their biometric and demographic data. Based on his vast experience and exposure within this industry and with regard to the government of India, he co-authored the Book Rebooting India; a call to reshape the country. In 2019, he was awarded the J. H. Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software for his work on the Julia Programming Language, and in 2013, he received The Spatial Ecology and Telemetry Working Group (SETWG) award for the co-creation of Circuitscape. The global food system is responsible for between 20-30% of greenhouse gas emissions, most of which are generated at the production stage. Take rice, for example, a food staple that is eaten regularly by over half the world’s population. Conventional rice production generates emissions equivalent to the entire global aviation industry. So how can we produce rice in a way that uses fewer resources and regenerates nature? A growing number of farmers around the world are changing the way they produce rice, by adopting an agroecological approach called the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). This method relies on a small group of simple interventions that together significantly reduces water use, methane production, and the use of chemicals, while providing better yields and reducing labour for rice farmers. Multinational companies who support this type of agriculture through procurement and product design can address their scope 3 emissions and build resilience in their supplier communities. According to Project Drawdown, SRI currently accounts for 4% of rice production. If this was increased to 25%, the emissions reduction would be equivalent to that which is currently generated by the whole of India. ------ Thank you for watching this video. Chetan Singh Solanki discusses his work towards sustainability through his “Energy Swaraj” lifestyle, and the immediate actions we can take to combat climate change across the globe, drawing concepts from his book "Energy Swaraj—My Experiments with SOLAR Truth".

Educator, researcher and innovator Chetan Singh Solanki is currently on an Energy Swaraj Yatra, which includes fully living on a solar bus for 10 years. Having started in November 2020 in the wake of catastrophic climate change, and committing until 2030, the purpose is to create a public movement towards the adoption of the use of 100% solar energy. Solanki has been referred to as the “Solar Man of India” by some, while others call him the “Solar Gandhi.” Following Gandhian ideals, he coined the phrase ‘Energy Swaraj’, and to establish it globally, he founded the Energy Swaraj Foundation (ESF). Solanki has also led major solar projects at IIT Bombay, including his SoULS project, in which he provided clean, efficient, affordable and reliable energy for 7.5 million families.

Solanki has been the recipient of many awards and accolades, including but not limited to: the Prime Minister’s Innovation Award for his SoULS project, the first prize in the Solar Chulha Design Challenge by ONGC, and three Guinness World Records. He is the Chairman of the committee of the Central Board of Secondary Education and a member of the National Focus Group on Environmental Education. He is the author of 7 books, has published over 100 research papers internationally and has 4 U.S. patents to his credit.
