The San Francisco Foundation and The Commonwealth Club of California hosted a discussion on Black communities' complex relationship with American land. This conversation explored systemic racism, "food apartheid," and the vital role of the Black farming movement in fostering environmental sustainability and worker cooperatives to ensure healthy, local food access for all.

Executive Director Doria Robinson (Urban Tilth) and Andrea Talley (Mandela Grocery Cooperative) shared insights on farming and food access for BIPOC communities. WECAN Executive Director Osprey Orielle Lake delivered the opening keynote, followed by a powerful panel, "Women on the Frontlines: Ending Extraction of People and Planet," featuring Indigenous leaders and climate activists from around the globe.

Human rights activists and business leaders Alex Gladstein and Fadi Elsalameen discussed Bitcoin's significance in the Middle East. Gladstein, Chief Strategy Officer at the Human Rights Foundation and co-author of "The Little Bitcoin Book," connects dissidents with leaders to promote free societies.

Elsalameen, a critic of Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, is known for pro-democracy and anti-corruption work, facing death threats. He is an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the American Security Project. Jonathan Curiel moderated this October 18, 2021 event.

A researcher at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Dr. Burquez is a co-author of "The Saguaro Cactus: A Natural History" and an expert in columnar cacti population ecology and genetics. His work also covers plant-animal relationships and land-use change in the Sonoran Desert.
