Maya is a sophomore at Duke University studying environmental science and global health on the pre-med track. She aspires to address the impacts of climate change and air pollution on health outcomes in marginalized communities. As a Lebanese and Syrian Muslim American, her advocacy and research is focused on environmental health and justice in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), a heavily impacted but often overlooked region in climate change discourse. On Duke's campus, Maya is a Huang Fellow, a Kenan Ethics in Place Fellow, an ActFor.Us contributor, and a Juhood staff writer. She will tell us how with her best friend, Ms. Anahita Kasehgari, they came up with the idea of setting up an environmentally friendly cosmetics company, and what lessons did they learn along the way. ‌She has studied project management at Iran Industrial Management Institute and she is Operations Manager at Orange Middle East and Africa Telecommunication company. Scheller Ghorbani Born in Tehran in 1987, an MBA graduate with work experience at Orange Telecom of France, with environmental concerns, thought of producing environmentally friendly cosmetics. Following sustainable development, she saw one way to do this in cosmetics and tried to take advantage of hidden opportunities in the industry, and thus Anshel was born. Drawing on her experience in peace-building and reflecting on some of the thinking that has emerged following Black Lives Matters, Susan will introduce the idea of a coalition for conscious sustainable living. Susan McEwen is one of the owners of Yoga and Refill Quarter. Located first in East Belfast, they have recently opened a second combined store on the Lisburn Road bringing a new concept in conscious living to Belfast. Susan has always been involved in nurturing intentional community and worked for many years locally and internationally in peace building initiatives. She brought together people with apparently different and sometimes opposing agendas to explore how they could combine their energy, creating and supporting a vision which everyone felt they could share. Losang monlam was ordained a Buddhist monk by HH Dalai Lama. For over 10 years he engaged in the Tibetan monastic tradition, residing both in the west and east. ; He has studied and practiced with many masters in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition for 20 years. He now lives in the bay area teaching, painting and writing. His work draws upon the world's spiritual traditions allowing the integration of buddhist principles into the cultural and spiritual experience of the individual practitioner. On Thursday, December 9, urban developer Thibault Manekin joined Garrison Institute co-founder Jonathan F.P. Rose to discuss how social entrepreneurship can be used to address systemic problems. Thibault discussed his urban renewal work in Baltimore — redeveloping historic buildings as affordable housing and office space for nonprofits — and illuminated some of his personal journey, which began with him using basketball to bring together children on different sides of racial and religious conflicts in South Africa, Northern Ireland, Cyprus, and in the Middle East. He also shared inspiring stories of hope and human transformation from his forthcoming book Larger Than Yourself. Alex Gladstein, vice president of strategy for the Oslo Freedom Forum, has connected many dissidents and civil society groups with business leaders, philanthropists, policymakers and artists, to promote free and open societies. He has shared his views at MIT, Stanford, BBC, the European Parliament, the U.S. State Department, and other venues. He is the singularity expert at Singularity University and advises Blockchain Capital. Fadi Elsalameen, who was born in Hebron, is a critic of Hamas and the Palestinian Authority and has received death threats for his pro-democracy and anti-corruption work. He is a graduate of Seeds of Peace, a successful businessperson, and has also shared his views at many leading institutions, including The Commonwealth Club of California.
