Reconciling Ways of Knowing Series, Dialogue 3: "Braiding Ways of Knowing" This dialogue originally aired on Thursday, September 24 at 8:30 am Pacific / 10:30 am Central / 12:30 pm Atlantic. Known for her award-winning books Gathering Moss: A Natural & Cultural History of Mosses and Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teaching of Plants, amongst many other ways in which she has had an impact as a teacher, researcher, and writer, Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer spoke in dialogue with friend, colleague, renowned ethnobotanist and moderator Dr. Nancy Turner on the theme of Braiding Ways of Knowing. Drs. Wall Kimmerer and Turner discussed how Dr. Wall Kimmerer had concluded that Indigenous and scientific ways of knowing could be braided together in her work on the role of traditional ecological knowledge in ecological restoration and the ecology of mosses. Fellow Reconciling Ways of Knowing project founders Miles Richardson, O.C., Dr. David Suzuki, and Elder Dr. Dave Courchene, Jr. joined Dr. Turner in the dialogue with Dr. Wall Kimmerer to connect her findings and reflections from her work to the objective of the Reconciling Ways of Knowing project to facilitate pathways for building better relationships across ways of knowing and for creating better stewardship outcomes together. And finally, participants asked Dr. Wall Kimmerer or any of the project founders questions about how they can apply the considerations from the discussion on braiding ways of knowing to their work and engagement in community. He is a researcher, electrical and electronic engineer and from the age of ten he studies biology, chemistry and physics on a daily basis. He has written and published books about how to make your own fuel and how to make your home energy-independent. He has been involved in research about fuel production with the use of renewable energy sources for 30 years. He has already been living in an energy-independent house for 25 years. He works with a group of people on the development of an energy-independent community and has modified his car to run on fuel produced by himself using renewable energy sources. His inventions have attracted the interest of various Greek and foreign organizations. Denmark is well known for the pioneering role that it has played in driving the sustainability agenda. And, remarkably, the country is well on the way to becoming a carbon neutral society – one of only a handful of sovereign territories to enjoy this status. But how did Denmark get here? According to journalist and Danish native, Jesper Tornbjerg, transitioning is very simple and requires at least two steps: decarbonise power production, and switch to green electricity. Importantly, he adds, the Danish case is proof that carbon neutrality can be very good business. Jesper Tornbjerg, 57, Senior Communication Manager at The Danish Energy Association, has been engaged in Danish and international energy policy for the last +30 years. As a journalist he has covered energy and climate change from the first energy plan including CO2-targets (Denmark, 1990) over UN COP3 in Kyoto and COP21 in Paris to a recent agreement by the majority in the Danish Parliament setting a 70% GHG reduction target for 2030. Mr. Tornbjerg is the writer of the publication “Green Energy for All – from Oil Price Shock to International Icon: 40 years’ experience from ‘The Danish Energy Model’ with high energy efficiency and constantly increasing sustainable energy” (2015). As a new project he’s writing and publishing 17 books for children regarding the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
