Mina Bakhshi, Haniya Tavasoli, and Rabia Hussain enjoyed freedoms in Afghanistan, pursuing education and work. Joining Ascend, a nonprofit teaching leadership and rock climbing, allowed them to explore their country's mountains. The Chumash, a maritime culture for millennia, built strong *tomol* plank canoes to navigate the Channel Islands' treacherous waters. European colonization nearly eradicated this craft through forced assimilation. Today, Alan Salazar and his Chumash and Fernandeño Tataviam communities are revitalizing *tomol* building and paddling, passing vital knowledge to new generations.

Support the Tataviam Land Conservancy’s project to build two *tomols*. This initiative will unite the Fernandeño Tataviam and Chumash tribes through educational events and workshops focused on *tomol* craft, culture, and paddling. Please specify "Tomol Project" when donating at tataviam.land/donation/.
