The UK government's announcement of an 81% greenhouse gas reduction (from 1990 levels) was globally praised as strong climate leadership and endorsed by CLG UK. Read their policy briefing: Making it happen.

In 2022, aspiring marine biologist Asa Miller, with deep roots in Cuba, learned about coral restoration efforts in the country's Matanzas Province. Recognizing that developing nations like Cuba disproportionately suffer from global coral loss and often lack resources, Miller launched `¡Viva el Vivero!` (Long Live the Nursery!) in 2023. This international campaign to restore Cuba's stunning coral reefs has since won multiple conservation awards.

During visits to Matanzas, 17-year-old Miller interviewed divers and scientists, analyzed coral nursery data, and mapped restoration sites. Back in New York, he founded a high school marine biology club to raise funds for planting coral fragments. Miller also produced an award-winning documentary showcasing his team's restoration methods, serving as a primer for other developing countries.

Dr. Shane Gero, a visionary marine biologist and National Geographic Explorer, is deciphering sperm whale communication. His groundbreaking research challenges our understanding of these leviathans, suggesting they lead meaningful, intelligent, and culturally rich lives. This work prompts us to consider whales as complex beings, fostering a deeper kinship with these ocean guardians.

Gero, a Scientist-in-Residence at Carleton University, founded [The Dominica Sperm Whale Project](http://www.thespermwhaleproject.org/) and is Biology Lead for [Project CETI](https://www.projectceti.org/). His science, which formed the basis for the Emmy-winning series *Secrets of the Whales*, aims to teach us how to coexist respectfully with marine life. The Center for Biological Diversity recently released stunning trail-camera footage of a rare wild ocelot in Southern Arizona, within ancestral Tohono O’odham Nation homelands. Protected under the Endangered Species Act since 1982, fewer than 100 ocelots remain in the U.S., with a crucial population in Arizona. Learn more about ocelots on our website.

Anthropologist Jeremy Narby observes a fascinating convergence: scientists are adopting shamanic language, and shamans, scientific. He emphasizes the critical role of words, arguing that our language reveals the boundaries of our worldview. This includes Western culture's long-held, but now challenged, belief that intelligence is exclusive to humans.

In this Bioneers episode, Senior Producer J.P. Harpignies discusses these insights with Narby, exploring how our linguistic choices shape and reflect our understanding of the world.

The Pitchfork Ranch in southwestern New Mexico offers a powerful story of habitat restoration and climate action. For 21 years, A. Thomas Cole and his wife Lucinda have transformed 11,300 acres, creating a vital ciénaga wetland, desert grassland, and wildlife corridor. This extensive work aids carbon sequestration and reintroduces endangered species, providing a tangible solution to environmental challenges and an inspiring call to action.

In an upcoming Speaker Series talk, Cole will detail their journey, from his distinguished legal career to dedicating retirement to this critical restoration.
