While volunteering at a Warrenville, Illinois juvenile detention center, Isabella Wallmow, 20, realized incarcerated youth needed healing, not just punishment. Inspired by permaculture agriculture, she conceived a gardening program. With support from the Resiliency Institute and detention staff, she launched the Seeds for Change Garden Program in 2019.

Seeds for Change creates a safe, healing space, equipping youth with marketable skills. The program empowers them to lead all aspects of gardening, from planting to harvesting, addressing food insecurity and providing valuable health education.

Ms. Shradda Reddy, a 10th-grade student, delivered a thought-provoking TEDx talk advocating for afforestation. She highlighted that environmental protection is an ancient concept, referencing the Bhagavad Gita's wisdom on man's relationship with nature and Wangari Maathai's Nobel-winning Green Belt movement.

Reddy issued a call to action to "regreen the earth," announcing her plan to form a team with schoolmates. They will appeal to Karimnagar District residents to plant at least five trees each. An inspiring orator and active student, Ms. Reddy studies at Paramita High School. Learn more about TEDx events here.

Architect and biodesign researcher Shneel Malik showcases this vision with "Indus," a wall featuring a novel biomaterial with microalgae for photosynthesis. Bridging futuristic techniques with cultural practices, her work empowers artisans and revolutionizes water interaction. At UCL's Bio-Integrated Design Lab, Malik investigates transforming urban systems into biological processes, fostering a circular economy. Learn more about TEDx at ted.com/tedx.

Agriculture accounts for nearly 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with over half originating from meat and dairy production. Our food choices profoundly impact climate, habitat, water use, and wildlife. Adopting more plant-based foods and less meat can significantly reduce diet-related emissions, conserve land and water, and help mitigate the extinction crisis.

This week’s discussion will focus on shifting towards sustainable, Earth-friendly diets. Topics include new research on the climate impact of American diets, strategies for dietary change, how individual choices influence food policy, and why grass-fed beef isn't a complete solution. The event features Jennifer Molidor, Stephanie Feldstein, and a vegan cooking demonstration by J.P. Rose.

Elder Nii Gaani Aki Inini (Dr. David Courchene) shares Indigenous, land-based teachings for uncertain times, emphasizing healing, connection, and Mino-Pi-Mati-Si-Win – a Good and Peaceful Way of Life. These ancestral insights remind us that harming nature harms ourselves, urging reconciliation with Mother Earth.

Our fragile existence depends entirely on the land. We are called to remember our Original Instructions, become true stewards, and teach this sacred relationship to future generations. Nature's urgent message is clear: change now, or we will not survive. Donations are welcomed towards The Turtle Lodge.

Could genomics offer a solution to the climate change crisis? Genomics, the study of genes and their functions, explores manipulating genomes for increased resilience against environmental harm. Yale Professor Daniel C. Esty, editor of *A Better Planet: Forty Big Ideas for a Sustainable Future*, advocates for genetic modification in nature as a serious strategy for sustainability.

This approach could harden species against climate threats, speed plant growth, and enhance forests' ability to absorb carbon, making nature a key part of the solution. The Greater Virunga Landscape is a globally rich ecosystem, yet Uganda faces significant deforestation and rapid population growth. To counter these challenges, a forest landscape restoration project is scaling up efforts. The goal is to restore 120,000 hectares, up from 16,000, adjacent to protected areas.

This initiative partners with smallholder farmers, developing forest value chains for both socio-economic transformation and biodiversity conservation. WWF is crucial in this, creating sustainable business models to attract investment for tree planting, processing equipment, and conservation activities. These models will improve local livelihoods, ensure a sustainable timber supply, and protect vital primary forests.

How can we nurture bees in urban environments for biodiversity? We often overlook their crucial role in our survival. Animal behaviorist Aggelina Kanellopoulou proposes a creative, colorful, and aromatic approach to support them.

Aggelina, with a background in psychology and animal behavior, developed her passion through beekeeping and global research. She believes science is a tool for education, driving change. She has worked internationally with children and supervised conservation efforts.

In 2017, Aggelina founded "The Bee Camp" to protect urban biodiversity, promote bee protection, and increase urban plant life. Her vision was shared at a TEDx event. Learn more at TEDx.
