The Pathways to Planetary Health initiative at the Garrison Institute hosted an online forum on June 24. Garrison Institute Co-founder Jonathan F.P. Rose joined Kate Raworth, Leonora Grcheva, and Erinch Sahan from Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) to explore Doughnut Economics. This framework defines the goal of economics as "social and ecological wellbeing rather than growth."

The discussion highlighted its global application. Kate Raworth introduced the concept, followed by Leonora Grcheva's insights on city implementation and Erinch Sahan's perspective on business applications. This insightful forum, reflecting the Garrison Institute's "Timeless Wisdom, Timely Action," offered ideas for improving the quality of life for all.

Microplastics and nanoplastics, along with their constituent chemicals, are increasingly found in the human body, including the brain, placenta, and other organs. Few realize plastics contain over 16,000 chemicals, with more than a quarter known to be toxic.

Join Beyond Plastics, Ami Zota (Columbia University), and Ryan Babadi (Toxic-Free Future) for a free webinar on toxic chemicals in plastics. Learn about chemicals in common products like toys, packaging, and cosmetics, their health and environmental impacts, and how to protect yourself and your community.

Rising chronic diseases are partly linked to hazardous chemicals leaching from plastic food packaging and utensils. While food packaging pollutants are a public health concern, research on a strong causal link between plastics and conditions like infertility or immune disorders is still developing. TEDx events are independently organized; guidelines are available here.

In her TEDx talk, Dr. Jane Muncke explains chemical migration from plastic food contact materials and discusses regulatory gaps. She advocates for inert materials like glass and stainless steel. As Managing Director of the Food Packaging Forum (FPF), Dr. Muncke co-founded the organization to share scientific information on food packaging’s health and environmental impacts. Carl Safina explores the inner lives of animals, revealing their capacity for perception, thought, and emotion. He challenges us to reconsider how we refer to them, emphasizing their individuality and the urgent need to protect them as we face a crisis of extinction. He poses a critical question: Do we have the will to ensure the survival of life on Earth?

Safina, a recipient of multiple prestigious fellowships and awards, holds a PhD in ecology and serves as the inaugural endowed professor for nature and humanity at Stony Brook University. He has contributed to various publications, including The New York Times and National Geographic. This talk was part of a TEDx event, independently organized by a local community.
