This high-level event will explore how trade and trade-related policies could be used to support decarbonisation, focusing specifically on Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAM). Alternatives to CBAMs, such as the inclusion of climate and environmental conditions in trade agreements and the formation of ‘Carbon clubs’ are also discussed. The event, organised by the Brussels office of CISL, will centre on the launch of a new report ‘On the Borderline: The EU CBAM and its place in the world of trade’. The report presents an independent analysis that provides a systematic and thorough assessment of the opportunities and barriers for implementing CBAMs, and what factors could improve their feasibility. It contributes to the growing debate on the EU’s recent CBAM proposal, which has attracted much discussion and interest around the role of trade in climate policy and the impact of climate policy on trade relations. At the end of COP26, this CISL event (hosted at Scottish Power's Glasgow Headquarters) captured the key messages, insights and actions from the summit, and explored implications for business and the finance industry. Bringing together experts in climate science and policy, business and finance, this event showcased reflections and discussions on the key topics emerging from COP26 and how to address the challenges of the coming years. The science and policy session included reactions to IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, progress on global climate negotiations and the Paris Agreement, identifying wins and remaining challenges for policy. The business session considers alignment of words and actions, translating the policy statements into metrics and targets for business, including the role of technology and research and development needs for decarbonisation and adaptation. The finance session addresses capital and risk sharing systems for a resilient and just transition, how net zero commitments align with this and implications for business and finance itself. The event concluded by reflecting on what this means for leaders in the short, medium and long-term. The year ahead will be a year of climate action. The UK is host of the #COP26 global climate summit taking place in November 2021. The government has committed to ‘build back greener’ as we emerge from the pandemic and to publish a net zero Strategy setting out how it will deliver on climate action ahead of COP26. Government, business and civil society must work in partnership to get on track to net zero and to ensure the net zero Strategy maps out a credible, comprehensive and realistic pathway to net zero. All sectors and levels of the economy will need to commit to action, set goals and pick up the pace to achieve ambitious emissions reductions. CLG UK has published ‘Bridging the gap: UK business and policy leadership for net zero’. Building on analysis undertaken by CISL’s Centre for Policy and Industrial Transformation that examines the progress that has been made towards reducing emissions in four key sectors: power and energy, built environment, road transport, and agriculture and land use, CLG UK’s publication Bridging the Gap sets out steps for how business and government can work together to bridge the gap between present action and necessary ambition. Collaboration between governments, financial institutions and corporates will be key to delivering the transformations required. UK Business Group Alliance for Net Zero: Shifting the whole economy to meet the UK’s net zero targets Tuesday, 2 November, 2021 COP26, WMB Business Pavilion, Blue Zone, SEC, Glasgow The UK Business Group Alliance for Net Zero (BGA) is a network of leading business groups working to increase political and business ambition with the aim of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in the UK. In the lead up to COP26, CLG UK, who coordinate the BGA, has worked with other members of the BGA to increase political and business ambition towards the UK’s net zero target.
