In November 2018, Paradise, California suffered through the nation's deadliest wildfire in a century. The Camp Fire leveled the mountain town, killing 85 people and destroying more than 18,000 structures. At the time, reporter Lizzie Johnson was a staff writer for the San Francisco Chronicle. Her definitive firsthand accounts of the fire and its wreckage helped tell the vivid story of this massive disaster. Three years later, Johnson's new book, Paradise: One Town's Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire, provides a detailed overview of the fire that destroyed Paradise, examines what went wrong and suggests ways to avert future tragedies as the climate crisis unfolds and California's drought worsens. Drawing on years of on-the-ground reporting and reams of public records, including 911 calls and testimony from a grand jury investigation, Johnson provides a minute-by-minute account of the Camp Fire, following residents and first responders as they fight to save themselves and their town. The government has committed to ‘build back greener’ as we emerge from the pandemic and to publish a net zero Strategy setting out how it will deliver on climate action ahead of COP26. Government, business and civil society must work in partnership to get on track to net zero and to ensure the net zero Strategy maps out a credible, comprehensive and realistic pathway to net zero. All sectors and levels of the economy will need to commit to action, set goals and pick up the pace to achieve ambitious emissions reductions. But when industrial development threatens the coastline and its biodiverse ecosystems, he spearheads a movement to save his homeland. Patagonia Films’ documentary short Totoganashi follows Yusei’s evolution from pro surfer and father to the founder of NEDI, a nonprofit named for the space where the ocean intertwines with the land. As a Tennessee native, Erica Davis, is keenly aware of the role that oil and gas extraction plays in her home state, as well as the fact rural Tennesseans often benefit little from resource extraction operations within their communities. Working in collaboration with grassroots organizers in Campbell County, TN, Davis has researched, written, and obtained sponsorship for a bill to reform oil and natural gas severance taxes. In Tennessee, severance taxes are the only legislative means to ensure that part of the wealth associated with oil and gas production remains in-state. Davis’s bill seeks to raise these taxes and change the way the tax revenue is distributed so that all of the revenue returns to the affected communities in the county where extraction occurred. (Impacted communities currently receive only one-third of the revenue). Davis, who’s now pursuing an environmental law degree, lobbied hard to help raise bipartisan support for the bill. Unfortunately, the bill was dropped from the 2015-2016 docket. Davis intends to revive the bill in the next legislative session.
