This TEDxXinyi video featured as “story in story” production in combination with speaker's green DNA concept as sustainable journey for global audience, and deep dive to local urban design issue. The relationship between human beings and our living environments extends from our home, communities, and to our cities. Great design transcends time and memory, like a green DNA imprinted in the way we interact with our surroundings. Dolly Lin is an architect from Taiwan who has been in the industry for nearly 40 years, and is a marker in the industry as a woman who broke through the glass ceiling, and influenced the landscape of our cities. Dolly Lin has incorporated green DNA into design throughout her career. To her, the house itself is a community, and the community needs to be connected with nature. She delivered her holistic designs of sustainable city centre building in Xinyi Taipei using recyclable materials and sustainable energy sources. She believes building materials and the design of space is like our family members, we live and breathe with them on a daily basis. Dolly Lin designed an iconic building with bold colours that foretold the city development making it a hot spot for recreation and entertainment. We also highlight the Taiwan IKEA flagship store which provides its surrounding community with bicycles that extends the idea of green living outside of its building and brings people together through bike paths and shared space. Dolly Lin’s designs are an extension of her ideas for an ideal home, one that incorporates nature and air into its building elements. It also inspires energy from bringing people together strengthening the connections between people and their surroundings. Dolly Lin’s home in the mountains of YangMinShan is a capsule of her design and ideas. Restructuring an old building and retaining an old tree with the house allowed her to reduce building waste and retain the memories from the past. She brought in the idea of a self cooling design without air conditioning, and bringing together the outdoor and indoor space. She brought in light that flows with the hours in a day and created a space that welcomes nature as a family member. This is the green design DNA she would like to retain and explore with education and additional innovations.
