The Global Women’s Assembly for Climate Justice: Path to COP30 and Beyond, hosted virtually by the Women’s Earth and Climate Network (WECAN) from June 23-28, 2025, convened over 125 grassroots and frontline women leaders, advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries. Across 25 panels, participants shared diverse visions and strategies for a just and healthy world.

The first Igniting the Fire Gathering, initiated by Elder Dave Courchene, occurred in 2006 at Manitou Api, a sacred site in Manitoba's Whiteshell Provincial Park. This event, featuring Elders Robin Greene and Don Cardinal, reunited Original Peoples, with turtles symbolizing new life and Indigenous rebirth.

Now an annual event by Turtle Lodge, Igniting the Fire is open to all cultures, bringing nations to Manitou Api to share knowledge and ceremonies, with Elders transferring wisdom to youth. This forum united over 125 grassroots women leaders, advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries, offering interpretation in four languages. Across 25 panels, participants presented diverse visions and strategies for a healthy, just world.

Global women leaders recently convened to spotlight alternative economic models for people, planet, and a just transition. They emphasized community-led solutions, feminist economics, Indigenous knowledge, and ancient concepts of reciprocity with Earth.

Discussions covered land rematriation, the care economy, post-growth, and Buen Vivir. These emerging, socially just, and ecologically enhancing models offer a path forward for a caring global economy.

Speakers included Monique Verdin (Houma Nation), Nati Greene (Global Alliance for Rights of Nature), Rhiana Gunn-Wright (Roosevelt Institute), Sandrine Dixson-Declève (The Club of Rome), and Margaret Kwateng (Grassroots Global Justice Alliance), with moderation by Osprey Orielle Lake (WECAN).
