A massive proposed lithium mine at Thacker Pass, Nevada, is being fast-tracked by federal and state agencies. This $1.3 billion project promises tens of billions in profit, but it faces strong opposition due to its devastating potential impacts.
The mine threatens to pollute local streams, smother Lahontan cutthroat trout spawning grounds with radioactive sediment, block Pronghorn antelope migration routes, and destroy Greater sage-grouse habitat. Local communities could suffer acid rain, ancient cultural sites face desecration, and this quiet wilderness would become an industrialized zone. This project exemplifies a critical conflict between profit and planet.
Modern capitalism's unfettered usefulness may be ending. It's time to explore economic models that prioritize universal values, humanity's future, and survival over mere shareholder returns.

When considering an electric vehicle, have you thought about battery recycling? The increasing production of lithium-ion batteries for EVs presents major economic and environmental challenges at their end-of-life. Sulalit Bandyopadhyay, a researcher at NTNU and Delft University of Technology, is developing efficient, closed-loop recycling strategies to recover metals from old car batteries for new ones.
In his TEDx talk, Dr. Bandyopadhyay raises awareness about this critical issue. He argues that consumer demand, driven by asking the right questions, will compel society and the market to prioritize battery recycling. Learn more about the speaker: Sulalit Bandyopadhyay's Biography. This talk was independently organized as a TEDx event; find out more at TEDx.
