Other Worlds: Edward Burtynsky

"Other Worlds: The Photography of Edward Burtynsky," directed by Simon Brothers, highlights the work of Edward Burtynsky, a 2016 Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts recipient.

The film is a co-production of the Canada Council for the Arts (Conseil des arts du Canada) & Powerline Films. It is presented by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Independent Media Arts Alliance.

The Canada Council for the Arts is a federal Crown corporation, established in 1957, dedicated to fostering and promoting the arts.

Edward Burtynsky: Manufactured landscapes

In his 2008 TED talk, Edward Burtynsky, recipient of the 2005 TED Prize, presented his "Manufactured Landscapes." He wished his stunning photographs, which document humanity's impact on the world, would inspire millions to join a global conversation on sustainability.

Burtynsky's riveting slideshow vividly illustrates how industrial development alters Earth's natural landscape. Featuring scenes from mountains of tires to rivers of bright orange mining waste, his images are both beautiful and horrifying, prompting reflection on our environmental footprint.

Trudell served as spokesperson for the United Indians of All Tribes during the 1969 Alcatraz takeover, broadcasting as *Radio Free Alcatraz*. Throughout the 1970s, he chaired the American Indian Movement.

Trudell (2005 Documentary)

The 2005 documentary "Trudell" chronicles the life of American Indian activist and poet John Trudell. The film traces his journey from childhood in Omaha, Nebraska, through his leadership in the American Indian Movement, and his subsequent rebirth as a musician and spoken word poet following the tragic death of his wife in a suspected arson fire. Directed and produced by Heather Rae over more than a decade, "Trudell" aired nationally on PBS's Independent Lens series on April 11, 2006. Notable contributors include Robert Redford, Kris Kristofferson, and Sam Shepard.

Surviving Disappearance, Re-Imagining Native Peoples

Matika Wilbur, a leading Pacific Northwest photographer, has exhibited extensively in regional, national, and international venues such as the Seattle Art Museum and the Nantes Museum of Fine Arts in France. After studying photography at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography and Brooks Institute, she became a certified teacher at Tulalip Heritage High School, inspiring youth in her indigenous community.

A Native American woman of the Swinomish and Tulalip Tribes, Matika is a unique artist and social documentarian in Indian Country. Her work explores contemporary Native identity and experience with insight and passion, communicated through the impeccable artistry of her silver gelatin photographs. Reverend Billy Faces Year in Prison for Protesting JPMorgan Chase's Financing of Fossil Fuels

For over a decade, activist performance artist Bill Talen, known as Reverend Billy, and his Church of Stop Shopping, have preached against recreational consumerism and climate disaster. He was recently arrested after a 15-minute musical protest at a JPMorgan Chase Bank in Manhattan, highlighting the bank's environmental record and the extinction of the Central American golden toad.

Facing misdemeanor charges that could lead to a year in prison, Reverend Billy and The Stop Shopping Choir continue to perform in New York City every Sunday through December 22. Reverend Billy is also featured in the film and book, "What Would Jesus Buy?" The book is available for purchase.
