Through enhanced agricultural practices, improved post-harvest management, and better access to markets, agropastoral communities are strengthening their livelihoods and creating more sustainable futures. Implemented by FAO in partnership with WFP and funded by the Government of Norway, this three-year initiative strengthened local institutions and supported vulnerable groups, including pregnant and lactating women, contributing to healthier, more resilient, and economically empowered households. Global food markets are facing increasing pressure from conflict, climate extremes, economic uncertainty, and supply chain disruptions. Yet despite these shocks, global food markets often recover quickly and regain their equilibrium. But the resulting food price spikes can have severe consequences for food security, underscoring the importance of international cooperation. In this episode of The Work We Do, we speak with FAO Senior Economist George Rapsomanikis and Economist Andrea Zimmermann about The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets (SOCO) 2026. They examine how shocks affect food trade and its implications for food security, what makes global markets resilient, and why international cooperation matters more than ever. https://www.fao.org/newsroom/story/more-shade-for-more-cocoa-in-c%C3%B4te-d-ivoire/en In Côte d'Ivoire, cocoa farmers are restoring degraded land and building resilience to climate change through agroforestry. Sylvie Sopie N'Gbesso doubled her cocoa production in just two years, while Nicole Kambou is scaling up sustainable cocoa farming through a cooperative that gives farmers access to equipment and labour. This story showcases two complementary FAO initiatives: PROMIRE, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), which supports farmers in adopting zero-deforestation cocoa agroforestry, and SCOLUR-CI, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which strengthens cooperative models for sustainable cocoa production, landscape restoration and biodiversity conservation. Together, these initiatives are helping cocoa farmers protect forests, restore ecosystems and secure their livelihoods for generations to come. Through FAO’s anticipatory action approach, with support from the Federal Government of Germany, early warning information is helping communities make timely decisions, while access to water and cash assistance is strengthening resilience. The initiative is helping families act early, protect their livelihoods, and reduce the impact of drought before it hits hardest. While coffee farming supports many families, some children are still at risk of child labour due to economic challenges. The project is strengthening inspections, improving labour standards, and building the capacity of local stakeholders to prevent and respond to child labour in farms and processing facilities. It is helping make coffee production more responsible while keeping children in school and supporting safer, better futures. Food and agricultural trade increased fivefold between 2000 and 2024, with low- and middle-income countries becoming more integrated into global markets. Yet these markets face growing exposure to shocks, including extreme weather, conflicts, pandemics, macroeconomic pressures and financial crises. The 2026 edition of The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets examines how such shocks affect trade, how disruptions are transmitted through trade linkages, and what this means for global food security. It highlights the need for trade policies that reflect the interdependence of agrifood systems, strengthen resilience and help mitigate the effects of shocks on food markets and food security. A new El Niño phase has begun, placing global agriculture on high alert. An analysis by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) identifies regions where El Niño-linked drought is most likely to impact crops and pasturelands. This raises significant risks for agricultural-dependent livelihoods and food security, particularly in areas already facing crises. For full details, visit: FAO News.

Brazil's "Alimenta Cidades" (Feeding Cities) strategy demonstrates how urban centers can transform agrifood systems. This initiative integrates food security, climate action, biodiversity, and social equity through coordinated government efforts and strong civil society engagement, highlighting the importance of policy alignment from the municipal level.
Through the voices of policymakers and community leaders, the strategy showcases how coordinated, cross-sector action improves access to healthy food, supports family farming, strengthens communities, and addresses food deserts in Brazil's largest cities. This approach emphasizes policy coherence and integrated public policies to reduce hunger, promote sustainability, and ensure no one is left behind.

Within Sermoneta, Italy's medieval walls, the ancient "trombolotto" citrus fruit is reviving forgotten local traditions and recipes. This rare yellow fruit is championed by producer Angela Concu and FAO Champion chef Cristina Bowerman, transforming it into a symbol of sustainable gastronomy.
Their collaboration, highlighted during the International Year of Women Farmers, creates new links between producers and chefs. This initiative promotes both innovation and tradition within the food supply chain, ensuring the trombolotto's unique heritage endures.
