Scaling Quinoa as Bhutan’s Special Agricultural Product (non-technical)

Bhutan has identified quinoa as One Country and One Product (OCOP) in 2021. Quinoa was selected for its high nutritional value, potential to generate income for farmers, and suitability for export and trade. As a climate-resilient crop, quinoa also presents an opportunity to mitigate the impacts of climate change on Bhutan's agriculture, particularly in the face of increasing environmental challenges. Quinoa from Bartsham Gewog in Bhutan is being developed as a Geographical Indication and Environmental Sustainability (GIES) product, with support from Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This initiative seeks to certify the product based on its unique origin, traditional farming methods, and environmentally sustainable practices to enhance its value and access to premium markets. FAO MuNe special visit - Elisa Toffoli

FAO MuNe: where music, art and nature come together On the occasion of the International Day of Forests and World Water Day, Elisa, a renowned singer and songwriter, joined FAO to share a message on the deep bond that unites nature, life and the future. “Water feeds the forest. The forest protects the water. Water gives life… and life becomes us.” An invitation to listen more closely, to recognize what sustains us, and to turn awareness into action. At FAO’s Food and Agriculture Museum and Network, this message is also reflected in a unique outfit on display that Elisa wore in concert, designed by Tiziano Guardini. An artistic creation that speaks of respect, harmony and dialogue with nature, reminding us that what gives us life also calls for our care. Like art, our choices begin with intention and shape the future we want to create. GIES For Better Environment and Better Life in Asia and the pacific

The GIES, a scientific tool developed by IGSNRR/CAS, identifies, assesses, and monitors the environmental sustainability of geographical areas producing Special Agricultural Products (SAPs). Its methodology establishes traceability for SAPs linked to unique geographical features, benefiting consumers, products, and their cultivation environment.

Applying GIES within the OCOP initiative enhances the recognition, value, and marketability of SAPs, showcasing their unique regional characteristics.

Why eating local may not always be better

Local is not always better. While birthplace once dictated nutrient access, trade has fundamentally changed this dynamic.

The true cost of food: making the invisible visible

When exporting crops, nations also export the water and resources vital for their growth. If prices fail to reflect these embedded costs, these valuable resources are effectively given away for free.

Webinar Building Safer and Healthier Workplaces through Human Rights Due Diligence

Bananas are the world’s most exported and consumed fresh fruit. Ensuring a just and resilient supply chain increasingly relies on Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD), especially as new EU regulations like the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) mandate compliance across the banana sector.

A webinar, organized by Victor Prada and Valeria Villacorta, examines how integrating Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) into HRDD strengthens business performance, enhances worker well-being, and fosters resilient, equitable supply chains. This human rights-based, gender-sensitive approach improves operational efficiency, reduces costs, and boosts worker productivity and loyalty.

Legelők és Pásztorok Nemzetközi Éve (2026)

Rangelands cover nearly half the world's land, supporting unique biodiversity and pastoral traditions. Pastoralists raise animals, contribute to food security, and preserve ecosystems globally through their diverse cultural heritage and traditional knowledge.

The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026) calls for policies ensuring pastoralists' access to land and resources, supporting their mobility, and promoting inclusive governance. It encourages investments in rangeland management, ecosystem restoration, animal health, and sustainable value chains. This year is a unique opportunity to highlight their significance and the importance of responsible investments and tailored policies.

FAO set poultry model farms to boost food security and income for youth and women

Responding to an urgent need for more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems, Rwanda's government identified poultry as key for national food security and income generation, particularly for small-scale farmers, youth, and women.

With FAO support, four model poultry farms were established in three districts. This initiative benefited 41 youth and 186 women and youth, providing 5,000 chickens and two months of feed. FAO experts delivered comprehensive training in poultry farming, entrepreneurship, technology, marketing, and business planning to foster self-reliance.
