Magazine, City Lights, and The Land Institute present “How to Get Off Fossil Fuels Quickly—and Fairly.” Stan Cox, author of The Green New Deal and Beyond, will join his Ecosphere Studies colleagues Wes Jackson, Aubrey Streit Krug, and Robert Jensen in a discussion of the need for climate policies that go far beyond new technology, carbon taxes, and other market-based approaches. The event is hosted by Breanna Draxler, Climate Editor at YES! The speakers will explore the fundamental changes that our society will have to go through in order to adapt to strict ecological boundaries.

After a 2011 march against strip-mining, Jackson Koeppel became committed to exploring alternatives to an extractive economy. That same year, he found his cause in Highland Park, MI. The Detroit-area city had lost 80% of its population, and in 2011, 1,000 of its 1,500 streetlights were decommissioned due to a $4 million municipal debt, leaving residential streets in darkness.

In response, Koeppel co-founded Soulardarity. This community organization is installing 200 solar streetlights and forming a cooperative of residents, businesses, and institutions to maintain them through annual dues. These affordable, eco-friendly lights foster community resilience and sustainability discussions.

The role of fossil fuel energy systems in driving climate change is now well understood. Far less considered, however are the ways public policy enables economic conditions that perpetuate a dependency on fossil energy sources. This session profiled the perspectives of speakers Lolita Jackson and Robert Hockett.

Jackson left a prosperous career on Wall Street to become the lead climate strategist for Mayor de Blasio in New York City. In this position, she was a key figure in helping to develop and implement New York City’s energy transition strategy. Jackson shared the stage with Robert Hockett, Cornell University professor of law. Hockett has been advising Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the Green New Deal since 2019, and he literally wrote the book on Green New Deal economics, “Financing the Green New Deal.”

While environmental impacts draw public outcry, less attention is paid to communities impoverished by energy providers prioritizing profit over human well-being. These communities hold the greatest potential to transform our energy system from one dominated by "big dirty energy" to a distributed, clean, and democratically controlled model.

Jackson Koeppel will share Soulardarity's work on community-owned solar street lighting in Highland Park, MI, and the history of US energy monopolies. He will explain why a clean energy transition means more than just changing power sources; it fundamentally shifts who controls that power.
