Spoiler alert: a lot. A scruffy orphan owlet was rescued and tended to by an award-winning nature author, Carl Safina. He named her Alfie. Their unlikely friendship was the beginning of a beautiful story.

Winning Alfie's trust paid dividends with rare glimpses into the inner world of owl family life--a remarkable recovery, a tender courtship, a transition into motherhood, the successful fledging of three owlets... Watching life unfold for this individual made it impossible for Carl to deny that owls are relational beings. He would come to learn how owls say "I love you".

What has made us forget our connection to all other living things? Carl argues Western culture has divorced humans from our humanity--that is to say our inherent connection to and responsibility for the natural world. His stance is that no global talks, no legislation, no new-fangled tech can solve our climate problem without a fundamental moral revolution.

"Real human progress is always driven by changes in values." He envisions a world where those values drastically shift towards recognizing nature is full of complex relationships and beings with stories to tell. As society evolves and aligns with these values, everything we make and do could be with the whole living world in mind. Carl Safina’s lyrical non-fiction writing explores how humans are changing the living world, and what the changes mean for non-human beings and for us all. His work fuses scientific understanding, emotional connection, and a moral call to action. His writing has won a MacArthur “genius” prize; Pew, Guggenheim, and National Science Foundation Fellowships; book awards from Lannan, Orion, and the National Academies; and the John Burroughs, James Beard, and George Rabb medals.

Safina is the author of ten books including the classic Song for the Blue Ocean, and his writing appears in The New York Times, TIME, The Guardian, Audubon, Yale e360, and National Geographic. Safina is now the first Endowed Professor for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University and is founding president of the Safina Center. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Dr. Thomas Coughlin, 2024 President of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), was interviewed at the WSIS+20 Forum High-Level Event in Geneva, Switzerland. IEEE is a worldwide membership organization.

The WSIS+20 Forum, held May 27-31, 2024, commemorates two decades since the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) established a global framework. This initiative promotes inclusive, people-centric information societies through digital cooperation.

The Pathways to Planetary Health initiative at the Garrison Institute hosted an online forum on June 24. Garrison Institute Co-founder Jonathan F.P. Rose joined Kate Raworth, Leonora Grcheva, and Erinch Sahan from Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) to explore Doughnut Economics. This framework defines the goal of economics as "social and ecological wellbeing rather than growth."

The discussion highlighted its global application. Kate Raworth introduced the concept, followed by Leonora Grcheva's insights on city implementation and Erinch Sahan's perspective on business applications. This insightful forum, reflecting the Garrison Institute's "Timeless Wisdom, Timely Action," offered ideas for improving the quality of life for all.

The session "Bridging the digital skills divide" will take place on Tuesday, 17 September 2024, from 14:00 – 15:15. It addresses the critical lack of digital knowledge and skills, a primary barrier to Internet use and closing the digital divide.

The discussion will explore the needs of specific groups, including the elderly, persons with disabilities, farmers, and women in rural communities, who face significant usage gaps. Experts will highlight intergenerational skill disparities and present successful digital initiatives.

The session aims to identify concrete actions, solutions, and tools for inclusive digital capacity development, contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During the UN Climate Ambition Summit on September 20, WECAN hosted an event where women leaders called on governments to halt fossil fuel extraction. They urged investment in a Just Transition, grounded in climate justice, care economies, and Indigenous rights, rather than business as usual.

The event featured two panels. The first, "Women Ending the Era of Fossil Fuels," discussed transitioning away from extraction and policy advocacy. The second, "Women-led Climate Solutions Are Central to a Just Transition and Thriving Future," showcased successful community-led climate solutions.

The "Women for Climate Justice Leading Protection of Water" event, a formal side event of the UN Water Conference in New York City, addressed climate change impacts on global water. Grassroots leaders, water protectors, and international policy experts shared solutions and strategies for protecting aquatic ecosystems within a climate justice framework.

WECAN submitted a commitment and released a Call to Action, urging governments to improve water protection through a rights-based approach and by ensuring women's leadership. Read the Call to Action here. Additional event links and resources are available here.

Boudreaux, President & CEO, discusses Oberon Fuels' mission to decarbonize the fuel and energy sectors. The company aims to slash the environmental impact of fuels, particularly in hard-to-abate areas like heavy-duty transportation and agriculture.

Oberon achieves this through renewable dimethyl ether (rDME). Their low or carbon-negative rDME fuel can reduce LPG's carbon intensity by up to 60% when blended, potentially cutting global CO2 by 750 million metric tons annually. rDME also offers a compelling approach for transporting hydrogen for its fast-growing applications.
