ESA's MEliSSA project develops regenerative systems to achieve high autonomy in space, transforming crew waste into food, water, and oxygen for long-term missions. This circular system aims to upcycle waste into vital resources.

After 30 years, MEliSSA's advancements also offer significant Earth applications. Viewing cities as "spaceships" needing self-sufficiency, this framework provides a model to reuse urban waste streams as resources for food, water, and energy, accelerating the transition to a circular economy.
