The Sustainable Economy Forum is returning to Algiers for its second edition.

This event convenes key stakeholders from the sustainable and decarbonized economy to discuss new models.

The inaugural Sustainable Economy Forum recently convened in Algiers.

This significant event aimed to foster discussions and initiatives, embodying its core message: "Let's build the world we want to live in."

A presentation was held for Algiers' smart and sustainable city program.

Speakers included Mrs. Amel Makhloufi, Director of the Environment, and Mr. Abdelali BERKANI, advisor to the Minister Wali of Algiers.

The Sustainable Economy Forum's opening session convened a distinguished group of participants. These included Mr. Djamel Eddine ZELLAGUI, representing the Algerian Minister of Finance, and Ms. Savina AMMASSARI, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Algeria.

Further attendees were Mr. Mourad Ahmia, Executive Secretary of the UN G77; Mr. Fouad SAOUDI, representing the Sonatrach CEO; and Mr. Mohamed SKANDER, President of the Sustainable Economy Forum. Ms. Justine LUMUMBA KASULE, Minister of General Affairs of Uganda, also participated.

Messaouda Mohamed Laghdaf, Mauritania's Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, joined Justine Lumumba Kasule, Uganda's Minister of General Affairs and ARFSD Chair, and Mohamadou Abdoulaye, CILSS Secretary General, to discuss Africa's strategies for confronting upcoming climate risks.

Maessama Cherhabil provided the introduction, with Zoubir Benhamouche moderating the discussion.

Zoubir Benhamouche, from the UN Economic Commission for Africa, discusses the projected impact of Climate Change on African economies.

He also outlines potential measures that can be implemented to mitigate significant damage.

The Algerian Investment Authority (AAPI) recently hosted a meeting with international counterparts to discuss strategies for attracting responsible and sustainable investment. The session focused on how investment promotion agencies can effectively draw such crucial capital.

Participants included Omar Rekkache (AAPI), Namia AYADI (Tunisia Investment Authority), Mohammed ALMAWALI (Invest Oman), Samet AKYÜZ (Invest in Turkiye), and Dr. Andrea Bianchi (Invitalia). The discussion was moderated by Salim SAIFI.

The Algerian community abroad demonstrates how diaspora can significantly contribute to the sustainable development of their country of origin.

This discussion featured insights from Malik FARAOUN (OPEC Fund), Anya BOUDAOUI (Finance expert), Mohamed SASSI (former Citibank VP), and Karim ZERIBI (Founder of the CMDA). Sarah CHARIF moderated the session.

Sebastien Delogu, a French Member of Parliament, asserts that a responsible and sustainable future hinges on a thorough analysis of the past. He highlights the critical importance of understanding historical events and collective memory.

Delogu's perspective suggests that by critically examining past experiences, societies can make informed decisions, ensuring progress that is both ethical and enduring.

Oil and Gas experts are debating the sustainable provision of accessible energy. This crucial discussion focuses on how to meet future energy demands responsibly.

Key participants include Abdelmadjid Attar (Former Energy Minister of Algeria), Warren Murdoch (Oxy Algeria CEO), Fouad Saoudi (HSE Central Director at Sonatrach), Youcef Khanfar (Renewables Central Director at Sonatrach), and Larbi Bouziane (Gas assets Director at TotalEnergies Algeria). Choeib Boutamine will moderate the session.

Wood and coal cooking remains a widespread practice across Africa. Experts recently convened to discuss how the continent can effectively manage the transition away from these traditional methods towards more sustainable alternatives.

The panel featured Messaouda MOHAMED LAGHDAF (Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Mauritania), Justine LUMUMBA KASULE (Minister of General Affairs of Uganda and ARFSD Chair), HH Princess Sophia WOLKONSKY and Thato RAPHAKA (Vakana Alliance), and Mohamed Abdellahi OULD BABAH (CILSS). Lewnis BADAOUI moderated the session.

This session explores new models and paradigms in renewables, circular economy, and carbon capture. These critical topics will be explained and debated.

The discussion features Lamine KADI (Professor), Mohamed Yazid ZERROUKI (Procurement Manager, Henkel Algeria), Hakim OUMACHICHE (CRS Manager, Holcim), and Karim RAHMANI (Founder, Carbon Impact). Malik FARAOUN will moderate the session.

Responsible investors will share their indicators for identifying sustainable investment opportunities. The panel features Souad LECHEBEB from Fonds National d'Investissement, Fatma NOURI representing Henkel Algeria, Mostafa Ahmed AWAD of El Sweedy Cable, and Rafik TEMMAR from Arc Groupe.

Abderahmane HADEF will moderate the discussion.

Research is fundamental to transforming production for sustainability. Recognized experts will provide an update on the state of research applied to this critical area.

Speakers include Chaouki BENHABBAS (CRAT), Mohamed HADJ BENIA (CRM), Mourad Benlabiod (Expert), Selma LECHAB (Environment and health economy expert), Fawzi DERRAR (Institut Pasteur Algérie), and Karim BENDHAOU (Merck). Nelly Rayane will moderate the session.

Dr. Hope Michelson discusses her research and its significance in a brief, under three-minute presentation.

She is a professor of development and sustainability economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Amy Ando, Professor of Environmental Economics, shares insights into her research and its significance.
