Wind farms, “green” mineral mining, and hydroelectric dams disrupt traditional livelihoods like reindeer herding. Framed as sustainable, these projects often dispossess Sámi, marginalizing their knowledge, rights, and self-determination for climate action. This issue was investigated by Tristen Taylor, Ingrid Gercama, and Nathalie Bertrams in “Green Colonialism: How New Mines in Sweden Threaten the Sámi.”

She is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology and founder of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment.

Kimmerer has been honored with the John Burroughs Medal and a MacArthur "genius" grant. Her research emphasizes the restoration of ecological communities and our relationship to land. She lives on an upstate New York farm, tending both cultivated and wild gardens.

This event gathered over 125 grassroots and frontline women leaders, advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries to share diverse visions and strategies for a just and healthy world across 25 panels.
