The Chumash have been a maritime culture for thousands of years, their territory stretching from Malibu to Point Conception and westward to the sandstone cliffs of the Channel Islands, twenty miles off the coast of California. To navigate the treacherous currents of the channel for fishing and trading, they built the strong plank canoe tomols for which they are famous. But over centuries of European colonization, which included forced assimilation and enslavement of Chumash people, the craft of tomol building was nearly lost. Today, Alan Salazar works alongside his Chumash and Fernandeño Tataviam communities to pass their knowledge to the next generation of tomol builders and paddlers. But unfortunately, seafood lovers rarely know how the fish got to their dinner plate. This knowledge is important, because a complex and opaque seafood supply chain opens the door to illegal and irresponsible fishing practices, seafood fraud, public health risks, and even human trafficking, forced labor and organized crime. These problems threaten the oceans and consumer’s wallets, and unfairly undermine honest fishermen and businesses that play by the rules. But these are fixable problems. The first step in ensuring that seafood is safe, legally caught, and honestly labeled, is traceability. Traceability increases transparency and accountability in the seafood supply chain by ensuring that information such as how, when and where fish are caught or farmed follows the fish from boat to plate. The ability to share information along the seafood supply chain reduces the risk of seafood fraud and helps prevent illegally caught product from entering the market. The Obama Administration is proposing to open the Southeast coast to offshore drilling, threatening jobs and tourism up and down the coast and putting the region at risk of devastating oil spills like the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The proposed plan would open the coasts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia to offshore drilling. As communities, elected leaders, and impacted industries along the Southeast coast unite in opposition to this major shift in federal policy, the Obama Administration is currently reexamining and revising its proposed leasing plan and is expected to release a new draft plan in early 2016.
