Jerry Taylor will discuss the state of the Republican party and how the party will move on climate action this Congress, and what the Niskanen Center is doing to advocate for carbon pricing. Jasmine Sanders and Clara Fang will discuss youth involvement in climate advocacy, how Our Climate is educating on carbon pricing, and how you can better engage youth in your community. Finally, Dr. Danny Richter will deliver a legislative update. Ms. Sanders is a climate scientist, strategist, advocate and native of Monroe, Louisiana. She is the Executive Director of Our Climate, a climate change advocacy organization energized by its youth grassroots movement. Striving to raise awareness to the intersecting effects of climate change and the communities of color who are disproportionately affected, she utilizes the positivity that results from uplifting our youth to make a global impact. Prior to founding the Center in 2014, Taylor spent 23 years at the Cato Institute, where he served as director of natural resource studies, assistant editor of Regulation magazine, senior fellow, and then vice president. Before that, Taylor was the staff director for the energy and environment task force at the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). As CCL’s first staffer in DC, he established our DC office where he has been responsible for developing our overall legislative strategy, clarifying the details of our policy, and interacting with other groups in DC. He has also overseen CCL’s research program, leading to our REMI Study, Household Impacts Study, and Dividend Delivery Study. Clara started volunteering with CCL in 2016 and now serves as the Student Engagement Director in which she engages students in climate advocacy and helps members conduct outreach to higher education. Prior to CCL, Clara had 15 years of experience implementing sustainability in higher education. She holds a Master of Environmental Management from Yale University and a MFA in Creative Writing from University of Utah. She is currently getting her PhD in Environmental Studies at Antioch University.

Recent successes include: ➡️ the RECLAIM Act, which would provide $1 billion to clean up abandoned mines and create thousands of jobs in economically depressed coal country, passed in the House this month as part of a major infrastructure bill. ➡️ the Growing Climate Solutions Act, #bipartisan legislation to help spread the use of climate-smart farming methods, advanced in Congress with the introduction of a House bill and a Senate hearing in the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee. ➡️ the Democrats on the U.S. House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis recently released their report* about steps that Congress should take to address climate change and they included a section that discussed carbon pricing. Madeleine Para, President of Citizens' Climate Lobby, kicks off our conference. Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv, leads the Diocese of Lexington and speaks out about the Church’s need to elevate care of creation as one of the core doctrines of the Church and a key pro-life issue. He is the Episcopal Advisor for the Catholic Committee of Appalachia and Bishop President of Pax Christi USA. Bishop Stowe was born in 1966, was ordained a priest in 1995 and appointed the third Bishop of Lexington by Pope Francis in 2015. His studies included the formation program for the Conventual Franciscan Province of Our Lady of Consolation at St. Bonaventure Friary in St. Louis, MO. He received his BA in both philosophy and history at St. Louis University in 1990. He subsequently earned a Masters in Divinity and a Licentiate in Church History from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA. CCL's Vice President of Government Affairs Dr. Danny Richter will spend time talking with Rep. Francis Rooney. Rep. Rooney was our Republican sponsor of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act in the 116th Congress and served as U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See from 2005-2008. Ambassador Laurence Francis Rooney III (born December 4, 1953) is an American politician and diplomat who was the U.S. Representative for Florida's 19th congressional district. A Republican, he served as the United States Ambassador to the Holy See from 2005 until 2008. He was one of the original sponsors of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (HR 763) in the 116th Congress. He had served as the CEO of Rooney Holdings (formerly known as Rooney Brothers Company), an investment and holding company based in Naples, Florida.
