The rapidity of these changes has come as a surprise, revealing major gaps in our understanding of how ice sheets respond to a changing climate. To a large extent, these gaps are due to the lack of measurements from the marine edge of glaciers - the Achilles' heel of glaciers. For over a decade, since the glaciers in Greenland began their retreat, Fiammetta Straneo and her group at Scripps Institution of Oceanography have been probing the edge of massive calving glaciers in iceberg-choked fjords in Greenland using helicopters, icebreakers, fishing vessels, and autonomous vehicles. Food production must rise by 70% to feed the planet by 2050, farmers are disappearing across the globe, impoverished communities struggle to get access to fresh healthy food, and America’s rust belt slides into decline. Could the answer to these seemingly disparate challenges lie at the intersection between a desert in Spain and a parking lot in Brooklyn? Matt Bodnar, named to Forbes “30 Under 30”, called a “Rising Restaurateur Star” by the National Restaurant Association and a “Strategy Pro” by Restaurant Hospitality Magazine, is a partner at early stage investment firm Fresh Hospitality. Bodnar joined Fresh in 2011 after several years at Goldman Sachs. He sourced and lead the firm’s investment in I Love Juice Bar, vertical farming startup Square Roots, Vui’s Kitchen, Grilled Cheeserie, and several more deals. Bodnar is a board member and works closely with a number of portfolio companies including Tazikis, I Love Juice Bar, Martins BBQ, Octane Coffee, and Fresh Technology. Bodnar is also the co-founder of Fresh Capital, which focuses on commercial real estate investing and development. 6G cellular networks will be extremely complex systems that must meet many competing requirements in a large variety of environments and use cases. A key enabling 6G technology will be deep learning, which can unlock previously hidden system-level gains, particularly by effectively learning custom site-specific communication techniques that are optimally adapted for each cell-site. Prof. Jeffrey Andrews will present a short summary of some of his group’s recent discoveries and technologies based on deep learning (DL) that demonstrate a large potential impact in 6G. The first is a novel and practical approach for beam alignment in millimeter wave and THz bands that can achieve a phenomenal speed up, at least 10x and in some cases approaching 1000x, by sensing and exploiting unique aspects of the environment. The second is a new architecture for estimating high dimensional channels by harnessing the expressive power of deep generative networks to develop a custom model of each cell’s channel distribution. The third is a site-specific multicell optimization that rapidly learns near-optimal global settings for each base stations antenna arrays, a problem that is completely intractable using conventional techniques. It is trained and tested on AT&T’s commercial simulation platform and shows large gains over existing 3GPP approaches. This talk explores Sunset Crater, Arizona's youngest volcano, erupted 940 years ago, impacting the Sinagua people. Geologist Dr. Jeffrey Meyer will share its story and his work mapping the unique Bonito lava flow, notable for traveling uphill.

Understanding this flow aids hazard prediction and interpreting past flows on Earth, the Moon, and other planets. Dr. Meyer, a retired geology instructor, became curious about the Bonito flow, leading to detailed mapping via Lidar.
