The teaching circle was originally held at the Earth Day 2012 Conference, sponsored by the Earth & Spirit Council on April 20, 2012, in Portland, Oregon.

Despite progress in Indigenous Peoples' rights since the UDHR, including greater participation and new agreements, severe human rights abuses persist globally. This event will reflect on the Indigenous rights movement's achievements and the vital work ahead to ensure human rights for all.

The event features respected Indigenous leaders and scholars: Kaimana Barcarse (Kanaka Hawai’i), Roberto Borrero (Taíno), Dr. Elsa Stamatopolou, Pasang Dolma Sherpa (Sherpa), Dr. Pavel Sulyandziga (Udege), Dr. Dalee Sambo Dorough (Iñupiaq), and Lucy Mulenkei (Maasai).
