Grandmother Betty Ann shares teachings about the role of the Grandmothers in our societies and the love and sacred teachings they bring to our children. Grace unexpectedly became the primary caregiver for her grandparents at a young age. Her talk explores the importance of preparation and support to help transform the often-arduous caregiving journey into a meaningful and fulfilling experience. Passionate about social impact, she founded Agewhale, a start-up to transform elderly care through innovative solutions. From Grace’s first-hand experience, she offers valuable guidance for navigating the often overlooked yet inevitable part of end of life. After graduating in Social Sciences from the University of Hong Kong, Grace joined an ambitious social enterprise, Fair Employment Agency, with the mission to end the forced labor of migrant domestic workers. At 26, she stepped into the role of General Manager to lead the organization through the turbulent 3-year COVID-19 pandemic. Raised by her grandparents, she has always had a special connection with older adults. Through providing care to her grandparents in their final years, she has firsthand experience of the challenges faced by family caregivers. Earlier this year, she founded Agewhale, a start-up to transform elderly care through innovative solutions. Lydia Jennings is a member of the Huichol (Wixaritari) and Pascua Yaqui (Yoeme) Nations and holds a doctorate in soil microbiology. Her work is dedicated to environmental science and the essential role of Indigenous communities in these spaces. Her hope is to create more inclusive academic and environmental landscapes. In place of her graduation, which was canceled as a result of the pandemic, Lydia instead celebrated by running 50 miles in honor of the Indigenous scientists and knowledge keepers who came before her. It’s a run to honor the past and present while looking towards the future. In this Talk, agripreneur Carlos Ignacio Velasco Castrillon talks about transforming the cacao industry in Colombia for the benefit of poor smallholder farmers, which is also serving to provide coffee farmers an alternative crop since climate change is making the production of coffee beans far more challenging. Carlos Ignacio Velasco is an agripreneur with several years of experience in the coffee and cocoa sectors. He holds an MBA from INSEAD and was awarded INSEAD’s Scholarship for Emerging Country Leadership. While in the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia (FNC), he worked in the offices of Bogota, Tokyo, Amsterdam and New York playing an important role in the development of Colombia’s specialty coffee program. Currently, he manages Cacao de Colombia, working with cocoa farmers in different parts of the country to improve the quality of Colombian cocoa beans and produce fine chocolates Cacao Hunters for domestic and export markets. The purpose of his company is to transform the cacao industry in Colombia. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
