The rate at which buildings are going up is fast accelerating and this presents significant challenges as an industry that is highly wasteful, whilst intensively using valuable materials. Kåre Stokholm Poulsgaard is Head of Innovation at GXN and works with applied design research in architecture through the development of strategies for informed design across 3XN architects and GXN innovation. He is interested in research and innovation in the built environment, specifically in the ways digital technology impacts human well-being, work, and learning and what this means for design strategy. Richard Boyd is a senior materials consultant at Arup. He became an engineer to deliver sustainable development, and has chosen to focus on making construction projects ready for a carbon-constrained future. He has lead several research and consulting projects applying circular economy principles to buildings and infrastructure; the objects which consume more resources than anything else on the planet. This year, the focus has primarily been on live contributions, but this film, produced by Creative Conscience, an organisation set up by a community for the community to inspire innovation among young people. During the 2018 Summit, New Harvest's Erin Kim provided an update on the state of the science of synthetic biology. Materials, energy and just about everything around us is finite. A more thorough understanding of the Earth’s limitations and commodity price volatility has made this a critical realisation for 21st century economies. Still, conserving natural resources, while still enabling economic, environmental and social prosperity presents a significant challenge, especially in a context of increasing demands for “things”, in particular from the 3 billion new middle class consumers predicted to hit the global markets before 2050. An emerging discipline may have at least part of the answer – want more “stuff”? Grow it. Using micro-organisms, like yeasts and bacteria, modifying their DNA to turn them into microscopic factories, chemists and biologists are now able to grow a huge range of resources, from real cow’s milk to meat burgers to high-performance silk fibres. The 2018 Summit took place at The Roundhouse in London on Thursday June 21st. Speakers discussed big ideas and world-views re-shaping how we view our economy, the role of digital technologies in making the previously unimaginable possible and shared stories of disruptive realities in business, cities and policy already happening today.
