The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) comprises two limbs. Its upper limb transports warm, tropical waters northward, releasing heat influencing European weather. The lower limb carries cold, dense waters southward at depth.

Driven by solar radiation, the AMOC's upper limb features vigorous currents like the Gulf Stream, flowing north along the Atlantic's western boundary. These currents, forming eddies, carry heat towards higher latitudes, reaching the Nordic Seas to cool and densify.

In regions like the Labrador Sea, these cooled, dense waters plunge via convection to 1000-2000m. This forms the Deep Western Boundary Current, the AMOC's lower limb, flowing slowly southward along the continental slope. Further south, this deep flow is disrupted by topography and eddies, losing its structure.

Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline, operating 20 years beyond its engineered lifespan, threatens 20% of the world's surface freshwater in the Great Lakes, along with sacred ecosystems, drinking water, and treaty territories. Indigenous women, tribal leaders, and allies are demanding its immediate shutdown and decommissioning.

Despite strong opposition, Enbridge proposes expanding and re-routing Line 5. This new route would devastate hundreds of waterways, including those vital to the Bad River Reservation, Lake Superior, and the Straits of Mackinac. It is imperative to stop this expansion and all fossil fuel projects now.

Richard Edwards, Director of Planeterra, stresses the urgent need to shift mainstream tourism towards a sustainable model. He highlights ecotourism's strong consumer demand and the critical business case: environmental degradation and climate change threaten the pristine destinations vital to the industry.

Edwards was videotaped by Barry Heidt of sustainabletv, with editing support from Sustainable Today, at The International Ecotourism Society's (TIES) 2010 ESTC event in Portland, Oregon.

Environmental justice addresses critical global concerns: communities worldwide disproportionately face environmental hazards, and the benefits and costs of environmental policies are often unequally distributed. Learn more about OECD's work on this topic: OECD Environmental Justice.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is an international body established in 1960. It collaborates to build better policies for prosperity, equality, and well-being. The OECD works with governments to establish evidence-based international standards and find solutions to social, economic, and environmental challenges, serving as a unique forum for data, analysis, and best practices. A related Vidéo en français is also available. For more about the OECD: About the OECD.

John Fullerton, founder of the Capital Institute, transitioned from Wall Street to become a sustainability advocate. Influenced by E.F. Schumacher's "Small is Beautiful," he collaborated with Allan Savory, founder of Holistic Management, to restore grasslands and return carbon to the soil. This work was highlighted in an October 2010 interview.

The Capital Institute seeks to harness capital for a just, resilient, and sustainable economic system. The Savory Institute restores global grasslands through Holistic Management. The Schumacher Society, founded in 1980, promotes strong local economies linking people, land, and community.

Rising chronic diseases are partly linked to hazardous chemicals leaching from plastic food packaging and utensils. While food packaging pollutants are a public health concern, research on a strong causal link between plastics and conditions like infertility or immune disorders is still developing. TEDx events are independently organized; guidelines are available here.

In her TEDx talk, Dr. Jane Muncke explains chemical migration from plastic food contact materials and discusses regulatory gaps. She advocates for inert materials like glass and stainless steel. As Managing Director of the Food Packaging Forum (FPF), Dr. Muncke co-founded the organization to share scientific information on food packaging’s health and environmental impacts.
