Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is a fundamental right for Indigenous Peoples, recognized by the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Since 2015, FPIC has been mandatory for all FAO projects and activities involving Indigenous Peoples.

Despite its importance, FPIC faces implementation challenges. Experts recently discussed these common obstacles and outlined necessary steps during the FPIC Donors Task Force meeting.

Indigenous representatives will gather at the "JUST TRANSITION: Indigenous Peoples’ Perspectives, Knowledge and Lived Experiences Summit" in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 8-10, 2024. Organized by The Indigenous Peoples Global Coordinating Committee, this event aims to redefine the "Just Transition" and "Green Economy."

The summit challenges mainstream interpretations that often fail to ensure a full transition from harmful impacts or deliver real justice for Indigenous Peoples. Over 100 representatives from seven socio-cultural regions worldwide will collectively develop Indigenous-led definitions for a truly just and equitable transition.

On November 12, 2020, the Reconciling Ways of Knowing Forum, with the Victoria Forum, hosted "Millennia of Experience: Drawing on Indigenous Knowledge in Responding to COVID-19." This dialogue explored how Indigenous knowledge and science can improve public health outcomes. First Nations communities notably experienced significantly lower COVID-19 infection (1/4) and mortality (1/5) rates.

Speakers discussed how Indigenous Peoples leveraged millennia of experience from past pandemics, using sovereignty and traditional medicines to protect communities and foster resilience. The session highlighted how Indigenous approaches mitigated negative health outcomes despite systemic challenges and marginalization, offering lessons for collaboration.

Cultural Survival will host an event at the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

Despite progress in Indigenous Peoples' rights since the UDHR, including greater participation and new agreements, severe human rights abuses persist globally. This event will reflect on the Indigenous rights movement's achievements and the vital work ahead to ensure human rights for all.

The event features respected Indigenous leaders and scholars: Kaimana Barcarse (Kanaka Hawai’i), Roberto Borrero (Taíno), Dr. Elsa Stamatopolou, Pasang Dolma Sherpa (Sherpa), Dr. Pavel Sulyandziga (Udege), Dr. Dalee Sambo Dorough (Iñupiaq), and Lucy Mulenkei (Maasai).

Randy Woodley and Graham Hill discuss embracing ethnic diversity and learning from indigenous communities on The GlobalChurch Project. Woodley, a descendent of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians, is a founding member of the North American Institute for Indigenous Theological Studies. Hill is the Founder and Director of The GlobalChurch Project.

Woodley and his wife Edith previously led a Native American gathering and developed a holistic service model, including a sustainable farm and Christian community. This initiative, which taught sustainability and eco-justice, was unfortunately disbanded due to violence. The GlobalChurch Project films Christian leaders and churches from diverse non-Western cultures, providing resources like curriculum, books, and training videos. On May 19, 2016, Amazonian women from Ecuador addressed the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Featured on the IENearth YouTube channel, the delegation included Gloria Ushigua (President, Sapara Women Association), Pya Malayo (Secretary General, Indigenous Group Katribu), and Alicia Cahuiya (Vice President, Waorani Nation).

Their unified message was to "Keep the oil in the ground," a position further emphasized by a letter sent to the China Mission to the United Nations.
