Moderated by Darrin Mah, JD, the discussion featured Elder Dr. Dave Courchene, Jr., Grandmother Katherine Whitecloud, Miles Richardson, OC, Tom Swanky, JD, and Dr. Sabina Ijaz.

Panelists explored Indigenous Peoples' historical responses to pandemics, how this informed their approach to COVID-19, and broader lessons for Canadian society and the global community.

Elder Chief Dr. Harry Bone, co-author of "Wahbanung - The Resurgence of a People," spoke on March 19, 2020. He discussed the Pipe ceremony's significance in defining the path to sovereignty, connecting it to a ceremony 50 years prior. This earlier event inspired "Wahbung: Our Tomorrows" by the Manitoba Chiefs, written in response to the Canadian government's White Paper, which aimed to eliminate Indigenous rights.

His message called for spiritual awakening, urging listeners to address community challenges like children's suffering, disunity, and lack of sharing or prayer.

Elder Felix offered four vital teachings: pray sincerely, even with tears, as the spirit world listens; avoid buying luck or success, which can bring harm; and once grounded in prayer, remain humble, sharing blessings with those in need. This path leads to success and peace.

On November 12, 2020, the Reconciling Ways of Knowing Forum, with the Victoria Forum, hosted "Millennia of Experience: Drawing on Indigenous Knowledge in Responding to COVID-19." This dialogue explored how Indigenous knowledge and science can improve public health outcomes. First Nations communities notably experienced significantly lower COVID-19 infection (1/4) and mortality (1/5) rates.

Speakers discussed how Indigenous Peoples leveraged millennia of experience from past pandemics, using sovereignty and traditional medicines to protect communities and foster resilience. The session highlighted how Indigenous approaches mitigated negative health outcomes despite systemic challenges and marginalization, offering lessons for collaboration.
