More than a third of all food is wasted. It's a tough to stomach statistics in a context where so many people are short of food or suffer from malnutrition. Food waste campaigner Tristram Stuart is focused on creating positive solutions that tackle parts of the issue and draw attention to the problem, including Toast Ale - a beer brewed from bread. Drawing inspiration from the ancient Mesopotamians, who used waste bread to create the first ever beer. But what will the circular look like in a more diverse range of contexts? One story that hints at a different model is the story of Kabadiwalla Connect. Siddharth Hande was studying flows of materials in the informal economy when he stumbled upon a business opportunity and identified the networks as potential circular economy supply chains if they could be incentivised in the right way. Tom Leenders and Dorus Galama were music loving designers who realised that they were throwing a lot of headphones away. Digging a little further, they discovered that 15 million kg of headphones are thrown away every year due to fixable mechanical faults or due to technology advances. Their solution is a startup wit the ambition to become the world's leading circular economy audio brand - Gerrard Street. The headphones that they have created are designed to be fully modular (can be assembled in less than one minute), to be the most durable in the industry, and are sold only on a service contract (you cannot buy them).
