Food Waves focuses on producing organic food for the local Portland, Oregon market. They champion "small acre stewardship" and sustainable agriculture as solutions to environmental challenges, aiming to develop future farmers by providing essential technical and financial support.

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), a highly contagious disease affecting sheep and goats, has long threatened rural livelihoods in Afghanistan. Outbreaks cause high mortality, devastating families reliant on livestock for food and income, especially amidst compounding climate and economic shocks.

From 2024 to 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), supported by the Asian Development Bank and the United Kingdom, led a nationwide vaccination campaign. This effort reached over 9 million animals across more than 780,000 families.

This concerted initiative has brought Afghanistan close to eliminating PPR, strengthening food security, improving nutrition, and building resilience among livestock-keeping communities.

In 2022, aspiring marine biologist Asa Miller, with deep roots in Cuba, learned about coral restoration efforts in the country's Matanzas Province. Recognizing that developing nations like Cuba disproportionately suffer from global coral loss and often lack resources, Miller launched `¡Viva el Vivero!` (Long Live the Nursery!) in 2023. This international campaign to restore Cuba's stunning coral reefs has since won multiple conservation awards.

During visits to Matanzas, 17-year-old Miller interviewed divers and scientists, analyzed coral nursery data, and mapped restoration sites. Back in New York, he founded a high school marine biology club to raise funds for planting coral fragments. Miller also produced an award-winning documentary showcasing his team's restoration methods, serving as a primer for other developing countries.

An upcoming forum will address what's working, what's not, and potential improvements for homelessness by next year. Panelists include Multnomah County Chair-Elect Deborah Kafoury, Portland City Commissioner Dan Saltzman, Suzanne Hayden (Citizens Crime Commission), Traci Manning (Portland Bureau of Housing), Matt Morton (Native American Youth and Family Center), and Leo Rhodes (Street Roots). KGW's Reggie Aqui will moderate.

This initiative builds on past efforts, such as Nan Roman's (National Alliance to End Homelessness) April 4th presentation on causes and solutions. A City Club research committee is also studying how Multnomah County's homeless population can benefit from healthcare reforms, with results due in January. The City Club of Portland has dedicated 2014 to finding practical solutions to end local homelessness through research, advocacy, and public forums.

Amelia DeLaPaz, with a BS and MA from Stanford, has over a decade of experience in environmental science education. She has taught at Johns Hopkins and with the US State Department in Egypt. For the past 10 years, Amelia has taught Earth and environmental science at LGHS, creating and leading the AP Environmental Science course. Through this, she empowers students with service-learning, data collection, and field trips to explore their environment.
