For millennia, human activity in Southern China, from rice cultivation to industrial development, has dramatically transformed the landscape and decimated marine life. Today, the bustling Greater Bay Area, home to over 100 million people, faces unprecedented environmental impact. Beneath the waves, the ocean is eerily quiet; fisheries are gone, and vital ecosystems like mangrove forests, seagrasses, oyster, and coral reefs have been destroyed.

Climate change, pandemics, and dwindling resources pose constant threats, with predictions that these global ecosystems may be lost by 2050. This talk explores how we can restore our oceans, regain ecological benefits, and reinvest in our future. It questions whether technology and entrepreneurship can reverse our path towards catastrophe. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx.

Donald Trump's infamous "It is, what it is" regarding COVID-19 deaths inadvertently highlights humanity's unpreparedness for natural systems. Whether a virus or climate change, our poor response demands urgent scientific understanding and decisive action. The pandemic serves as a critical wake-up call, urging us to avoid "crisis fatigue" and address environmental challenges.

This talk was delivered by Mark McGinley, an ecologist whose lifelong passion for nature began in childhood. With degrees in zoology and ecology, he dedicated his career to fostering scientific and environmental literacy. As a professor, he taught field courses, developed programs, and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Earth. He now works at Lingnan University. The U.S. House of Representatives has passed bipartisan legislation to ban the domestic shark fin trade. This action addresses shark finning, a cruel practice where fins are removed at sea and the shark's body is discarded. While finning is illegal in U.S. waters, fins are still traded, often imported from countries with inadequate protections.

The global shark fin trade is a primary driver of declining shark populations worldwide, impacting an estimated 73 million sharks annually. This unsustainable demand has led to over 90% declines in some populations, threatening one-third of species in major trade hubs with extinction. The U.S. ban aims to mitigate this devastating impact.

Woody Chan argues that climate change is solvable, despite feelings of helplessness. Drawing from his experience at China Water Risk, which evolved into a leading think tank in seven years, he shares how he overcame similar despair.

Chan proposes innovative solutions, from 3D printing steaks and capturing cow farts to slowing fashion. A Cambridge Geography graduate (2016) concerned with wastewater discharge, he joined China Water Risk, an NGO providing ecological and financial consultancy.

Currently, Chan aims to tackle water and climate risks from a business and financial perspective. This talk was given at a TEDx event. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx.
