"As we head into COP26, please know, we are not willing to die or sacrifice future generations for truly pitiful reasons of corporate greed and political power and hubris. Rather we are willing to fight to use our imaginations, to be alive, to thrive, to be courageous, to be uncomfortable for positive changes, to be bold, and to win. We are willing to endlessly fight for policies that prioritize social, racial and economic justice, and Indigenous and human rights."

Our communities and the planet are out of time, we need climate justice now! On October 26, Osprey Orielle Lake, WECAN Executive Director spoke out to world governments at an urgent one-day High-level Thematic Debate entitled “Delivering Climate Action: for People, Planet & Prosperity” at the UN Headquarters in New York. The event was hosted by the UN President of the General Assembly to call for hope and ambition in the lead up to COP26.
Osprey made it clear in her intervention today: No more sacrifice people, no more sacrifice zones. She spoke to world governments asking: Where are the government leaders willing to stand up to the fossil fuel industry? And, where is the $100 billion a year promised from wealthy countries so we can move toward a just transition? We can move billions once we claim a global climate emergency — and pulling from military budgets is a good place to begin.

Right now, current country commitments bring global warming to 2.7 degrees Celsius, far past the 1.5 degree target laid out in the Paris Climate Agreement. Osprey called for an end to false solutions and presented our Call to Action that was recently delivered to governments during the UNGA by Global Women’s Assembly for Climate Justice. It is a call to action from women and feminist around the world representing millions of people outlining in explicit detail what can be done to meet the 1.5 degree target with already existing climate justice frameworks.

Jones, founder of Green For All and served as President Obama's Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. This is Part 1 of a 27-minute address where he addresses the three fallacies that tore the floor out from under the American people:  rely on consumtion, rather than production; credit rather than smart savings and thrift; and ecological destruction rather than restoration.

Paul Slovic discusses human perception towards mass tragedies and losses at scale.

We as a global society value individual lives greatly and respond strongly to protect a single person in need, but often ignore mass tragedies and fail to take appropriate measures to reduce their losses. As the numbers grow larger, we become insensitive; the data fail to trigger the emotion or feeling necessary to motivate action. In some cases, large numbers convey a false sense of inefficacy, discouraging us from taking valuable actions. Understanding how our minds deceive us in the face of large losses of life is essential to motivating actions needed to reduce the harm from catastrophic consequences such as those associated with poverty, disease, climate disasters, and violence.

Paul Slovic received his B.A. degree from Stanford University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in psychology from the University of Michigan. In 1976, Dr. Slovic founded the research institute Decision Research with Sarah Lichtenstein and Baruch Fischhoff, where he currently serves as President. He has also been a professor of psychology at the University of Oregon since 1986. He and his colleagues worldwide have developed methods to describe risk perceptions and measure their impacts on individuals, industry, and society. His most recent work examines “psychic numbing” and the failure to respond to global threats from genocide and nuclear war. He publishes extensively and serves as a consultant to industry and government.

Dr. Slovic is a past President of the Society for Risk Analysis and in 1991 received its Distinguished Contribution Award. In 1993 he received the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association. In 1995 he received the Outstanding Contribution to Science Award from the Oregon Academy of Science. He has received honorary doctorates from the Stockholm School of Economics (1996) and the University of East Anglia (2005). Dr. Slovic was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015 and the National Academy of Sciences in 2016.
