Decoding hidden worlds: Unprecedented sensing and connectivity for climate, robotics and smart environments. This talk will cover a new generation of technologies that can sense, connect, and perceive the physical world in unprecedented ways. These technologies can uncover hidden worlds around us, promising transformative impact on areas spanning climate change monitoring, ocean mapping, healthcare, food security, supply chain, and even extraterrestrial exploration. The talk will cover four core technologies invented by Prof. Adib and his team. The first is an ocean internet-of-things (IoT) that uses battery-free sensors for climate change monitoring, marine life discovery, and seafood production (aquaculture). The second is a new perception technology that enables robots to sense and manipulate hidden objects. The third is a new augmented reality headset with "X-ray vision”, which extends human perception beyond line-of-sight. The fourth is a wireless sensing technology that can “see through walls” and monitor people’s vital signs (including their breathing, heart rate, and emotions), enabling smart environments that sense humans requiring any contact with the human body. The talk will touch on the journey of these technologies from their inception at MIT to international collaborations and startups that are translating them to real-world impact in areas spanning healthcare, climate change, and supply chain. SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy More than a month after the release of the latest IPCC report, the goal still feels hard to reach, and companies and governments seem to struggle to reduce their CO2 emissions. And yet, a revolution is happening right under our eyes: according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the world’s renewable energy industry grew at its fastest pace since 1999 last year and may have established a standard for growth in the future. From internal operations to business model integration: What is the role of businesses in the transition to renewable energy? What is at stake for the private sector? Does choosing renewable energy necessarily mean paying a higher price? Is affordable and clean energy for all achievable by 2030? Building on this momentum, we seize the opportunity to host a 2-part live panel discussion with B Corps working at the forefront of the SDG7 “Affordable & Clean Energy”. 6G cellular networks will be extremely complex systems that must meet many competing requirements in a large variety of environments and use cases. A key enabling 6G technology will be deep learning, which can unlock previously hidden system-level gains, particularly by effectively learning custom site-specific communication techniques that are optimally adapted for each cell-site. Prof. Jeffrey Andrews will present a short summary of some of his group’s recent discoveries and technologies based on deep learning (DL) that demonstrate a large potential impact in 6G. The first is a novel and practical approach for beam alignment in millimeter wave and THz bands that can achieve a phenomenal speed up, at least 10x and in some cases approaching 1000x, by sensing and exploiting unique aspects of the environment. The second is a new architecture for estimating high dimensional channels by harnessing the expressive power of deep generative networks to develop a custom model of each cell’s channel distribution. The third is a site-specific multicell optimization that rapidly learns near-optimal global settings for each base stations antenna arrays, a problem that is completely intractable using conventional techniques. It is trained and tested on AT&T’s commercial simulation platform and shows large gains over existing 3GPP approaches. Despite the advancements in the food industry and the world, there are still 690 million people across the world who go to bed hungry. Having witnessed the Green Revolution first-hand as a student of Agricultural Sciences in Punjab, Bishow Parajuli sees a sufficient deficiency of a balanced nutritional meal. Parajuli urges people to share a meal and to eat locally sourced and produced foods to reduce carbon footprint. Furthermore, he shares insights as to how one can consciously take small steps to reduce carbon footprint. Bishow Parajuli is the Representative & Country Director for the United Nations World Food Programme. The UN World Food Programme (WFP), which provides lifesaving food assistance to millions across the world – often in extremely dangerous and hard-to-access conditions – has been awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize. Mr. Bishow Parajuli, Nepali, took office as United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Representative and Country Director to India in September 2019. Mr. Parajuli brings 35 years of distinguished experiences in development, humanitarian affairs, diplomacy, fundraising, and management in over 10 countries in Asia, Middle East, and Africa, and WFP headquarters in Rome. Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Parajuli served for the past five years in Zimbabwe as the UN Resident Coordinator and the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Prior to joining the UN in Zimbabwe, Mr. Parajuli served as the UN World Food Programme Representative and Country Director in Yemen and in WFP HQ in Rome, as the Chief of Staff and the Director of the Executive Directors Office, as well as the Director of Government Donor Relations. From 2008 to 2011, Mr. Parajuli worked as UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Myanmar. Bishow has also served in various positions in WFP offices in Indonesia, Bangladesh, Mozambique, and Botswana. Bishow holds two Masters degrees in Agricultural Development and in Business Administration and an Honors degree in Agricultural Science. He and his wife have three children. These networks were open to visits by guests and visitors to the island. Kostas studied Agricultural Development & Plant Production in the Agricultural University of Athens (1983-1990). He continued with a MSc degree in Ecological Agriculture in Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands (1992-1993). 2004 he travelled to USA to be trained in Biointensive Farming by John Jeavons.
