Join the Commonwealth Club on October 18, 2021, for a critical discussion on the COVID-19 pandemic. As the world seeks to end this public health crisis, businesses are navigating mandates and playing a vital role in community safety and vaccination efforts.

A panel of business and healthcare leaders, generously supported by Kaiser Permanente, will explore how the private sector can collaborate to combat the pandemic and foster economic recovery. They will discuss effective strategies and responses to mandates.

The Commonwealth Club of California, the nation's largest public affairs forum, hosts this event. For more information, upcoming events, and to support our mission, visit commonwealthclub.org.

Advancements in ocean technology will soon enable vast observation of the ocean's 'twilight zone.' Melissa Omand, an Assistant Professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, plans to deploy hundreds of tiny glass robots as deep-ocean sentinels. These robots will track the vertical transport and sequestration of carbon from the surface to the deep sea, focusing on the 'biological pump' and the fate of carbon from biological sources like phytoplankton.

This presentation, highlighting Dr. Omand's work, was delivered at a TEDx event. Learn more at ted.com/tedx.

The TEDxXinyi video featured architect Dolly Lin's "green DNA" concept, a sustainable approach to urban design. A trailblazer with nearly 40 years in the industry, Lin advocates for integrating nature into our living environments, from homes to cities. Her work includes the sustainable Xinyi Taipei building, an iconic structure using recyclable materials, and her YangMinShan home, which exemplifies self-cooling design and indoor-outdoor integration while preserving memories. She also influenced the Taiwan IKEA flagship store's community green initiatives.

Lin's "green DNA" vision aims to foster education and innovation, creating spaces that connect people with nature and build lasting memories. This talk was given at a TEDx event. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx.

Rising chronic diseases are partly linked to hazardous chemicals leaching from plastic food packaging and utensils. While food packaging pollutants are a public health concern, research on a strong causal link between plastics and conditions like infertility or immune disorders is still developing. TEDx events are independently organized; guidelines are available here.

In her TEDx talk, Dr. Jane Muncke explains chemical migration from plastic food contact materials and discusses regulatory gaps. She advocates for inert materials like glass and stainless steel. As Managing Director of the Food Packaging Forum (FPF), Dr. Muncke co-founded the organization to share scientific information on food packaging’s health and environmental impacts.
