This workshop examines how society has institutionalized culture within leisure, tourism, and academia, positioning it in a specific economic niche. It also introduces the Critical Assessment Framework (CAF) for envisioning programs and indicators that foster a culture of sustainability.

Participants will identify and reflect on societal assumptions, insights, and blind spots. The workshop is presented by Douglas Worts, Culture and Sustainability Specialist at World Views Consulting (douglasworts.org), and Dr. Lynne Teather, Professor in the Master of Museum Studies Program at the University of Toronto.

Italy, situated between the rapidly warming Adriatic and Mediterranean seas, is acutely vulnerable to climate change. Last year, severe drought drained many rivers and dried up 45% of its farmland.

This year, northern Italy's Emilia-Romagna region faced catastrophic flooding, with rivers bursting banks and submerging thousands of acres after receiving half their annual rainfall in 36 hours. Professor Peter Wadhams, witnessing these crises firsthand from Turin, highlights heat as a major concern, regardless of varying wet or dry conditions.

Manabe shared the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics with Klaus Hasselmann. Their work was recognized for "physical modelling of Earth's climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming."

The prize, awarded for "groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex systems," also saw Giorgio Parisi receive the other half for his discoveries on disorder and fluctuations in physical systems.
