According to a new report, just 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988. Their actions are contributing to social inequality and the wider ecological crisis. But young people today can play a vital role in shaping the policies that can limit the climate crisis while building a more fair society. Tabitha Spence is a geographer, teacher and organiser based in Lahore. Her work centres around the need for a transition of the global economy to one that sustainably meets 21st century needs for all people. She works with the Asia Europe People's Movement, and is involved with Haqooq e Khalq Movement, Progressive International and Democratic Socialists of America. Fifth grader Lily Colson won the Stanley Black and Decker Sustainability Award at the 2019 National Invention Convention. Her Solar Lines concept displays the innovative thinking that is needed to address problems like climate change, demonstrating how the imagination of our youth can play a role in helping solve the problems their generation will face. SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy More than a month after the release of the latest IPCC report, the goal still feels hard to reach, and companies and governments seem to struggle to reduce their CO2 emissions. And yet, a revolution is happening right under our eyes: according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the world’s renewable energy industry grew at its fastest pace since 1999 last year and may have established a standard for growth in the future. From internal operations to business model integration: What is the role of businesses in the transition to renewable energy? What is at stake for the private sector? Does choosing renewable energy necessarily mean paying a higher price? Is affordable and clean energy for all achievable by 2030? Building on this momentum, we seize the opportunity to host a 2-part live panel discussion with B Corps working at the forefront of the SDG7 “Affordable & Clean Energy”. We all know the negative impacts plastic pollution has on marine life, but what about humans? After Sarah delivers a brief plastic production history lesson, she dives into a major issue when it comes to plastic pollution, microplastics, and provides the example of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to demonstrate the role of microplastics. Following this, however, is when Sarah brings up the main point of her talk: the impact plastic pollution has on humans. She ends her talk with providing examples of how to help combat plastic pollution and spread awareness for ocean conservation.
