Going to school in Southern California, Jess Grady-Benson had witnessed first-hand the stark connection between racial and economic injustice and environmental degradation. That drove her to organize students to take collective action for climate justice. In 2012, she co-founded the Claremont Colleges Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign. As one of the lead organizers of the campaign, Grady-Benson helped guide it to victory at Pitzer College — in 2014 the college board agreed to divest from fossil fuels. Though she graduated last year, Grady-Benson has remained dedicated to building the youth climate justice movement through the Fossil Fuel Divestment Student Network — a national youth-led network which seeks to strengthen student campaigns for fossil fuel divestment and press for a just transition from the extractive economy. As a member of the network’s coordinating committee, her work focuses on planning the strategic direction of the organization and training young divestment leaders to become organizers for the long haul. To this end, Grady-Benson has designed and led trainings for students and young alumni across the country. In the coming year, she will continue working to develop the network’s long-term strategy and leadership development programs as the Director of Training.

The disconnect between plastic trash and humans has been too prevalent for far too long. It is mind-blowing how much we use it, and yet many know so little about it. It has reached the extent where we do not even know where our trash goes, whether it is sorted and recycled, or simply dumped into towering mounds in landfills. And as important as these innovations and solutions to our persistent waste are, it is not nearly enough to make one switch from one straw to another. What we need is a real change, a change in our mindsets and lifestyles as we see the ever-pressing urgency of our fight against single-use trash. We just need to start with changing the way we view plastic. The disconnect between plastic trash and humans has been too prevalent for far too long. It’s funny how much we use it, and yet many know so little about it. It has reached the extent where we don’t even know where our trash goes, whether it’s sorted and recycled, or simply dumped into towering mounds in landfills. And as important as these innovations and solutions to our persistent waste are, it isn’t nearly enough to make one switch from one straw to another. How do you build long lasting relationships? That is a question we ask ourselves as strong relationships are something we desire in our lives. A concept of 'deep trust', translated from the Chinese ‘xìn rèn’ originated in China and can be traced back to Confucius. It was carried into different countries within the past few decades and is seen as a foundation for building sustainable interpersonal relationships. I will discuss my experience of growing up in China and reflecting on ways in which each and every person can easily incorporate this concept into their lives to build long lasting relationships. Anna Metz, a 17 year old student from Germany, is currently in Shanghai, China. Despite holding a German passport, Anna has lived in China all her life, and loves to connect to people in daily life and build relationships with peers from all over the world. She is a curious individual, being very much intrigued by questions regarding social, philosophical and economic issues. Anna's eagerness to learn more about different cultures has led to her continuous involvement in Model United Nations, which has nurtured her global awareness and strengthened her understanding regarding inter-cultural phenomena.
