We are living in a time of extreme polarization socially, politically, and religiously. Communities need to be healthy physically, emotionally, and spiritually to function effectively and meet the needs of others. By utilizing community empowerment and development principles through agriculture we can help communities become more sustainable. Buddy Walker felt a call to international missions at age 16 and made his first short-term mission trip to Mexico at age 19. He graduated from the Spanish Language School of Guadalajara, Mexico and received his theological training from the El Calvario International Bible College in Guatemala, C.A. He has served with numerous international disaster relief efforts, coordinated international mission teams and developed broad based partnerships for advocating sustainable community development with local government, churches, business leaders, educators and non-profit organizations. Buddy later began working with an agricultural consulting firm and received training in soil science and plant nutrition. He built and operated a wholesale nursery and has developed three micro-intensive farms and a community garden project. In 2012, Buddy started the Empower School & Farm, a residential educational and apprenticeship program located in Umatilla, Florida, which provides training in Christian discipleship, micro-enterprise, sustainable agriculture, community development and world missions. Anna sits at the centre of the story of how Finland is tackling the problem of food waste, and why that story seems to be heading for a happy ending. But how does the story begin? The characteristics of Finnish society play a crucial role here. Finland is cold, vast in size, and has a relatively small population of about 5.5 million. Survival imperatives mean that in general, Finnish society has had to develop a solutions-based, practical attitude to life, with a strong tradition of working together, even when the various actors don’t always agree. Given this understanding, the most important thing that Anna and her team have had to do has been to ensure that the motley crew of actors in the Finnish food system—the food and drink industry; the packaging value chain; retailers; the ministries in charge of environment, agriculture, forestry, economic, and labour affairs—are all at one table, reading from the same script. The model selects for voluntary action aimed at the profitability and sustainability of food chain companies, while spreading knowledge and understanding of food waste. The learnings are clear for all to see: food waste is a multi-faceted problem, and the solutions need to reflect that. If your carbon footprint falls and no one is around to hear about it, does it make an impact? Communities can amplify our climate-positive actions as we share ideas and novel approaches. Further, discussing such actions with our wider communities shifts the cultural norm to bring change to places where we didn't think it was possible. However, if a community lacks empathy and/or diversity, it can prevent progress. So we need to nurture our communities as we would a plant, to promote new growth. Dr Anna Hands will talk about the benefits of community in bringing about the sustainable behaviour change necessary to tackle the climate crisis. Dr Anna Hands is the director of the non-profit community organisation PPL PWR, which promotes sustainability and sustainable innovation through public engagement. She recently completed her PhD in Neuroscience at UCL and works as a Public Officer at the Academy of Medical Sciences, bringing together stakeholders from the public, private and governmental sectors to discuss societal health challenges. How do you build long lasting relationships? That is a question we ask ourselves as strong relationships are something we desire in our lives. A concept of 'deep trust', translated from the Chinese ‘xìn rèn’ originated in China and can be traced back to Confucius. It was carried into different countries within the past few decades and is seen as a foundation for building sustainable interpersonal relationships. I will discuss my experience of growing up in China and reflecting on ways in which each and every person can easily incorporate this concept into their lives to build long lasting relationships. Anna Metz, a 17 year old student from Germany, is currently in Shanghai, China. Despite holding a German passport, Anna has lived in China all her life, and loves to connect to people in daily life and build relationships with peers from all over the world. She is a curious individual, being very much intrigued by questions regarding social, philosophical and economic issues. Anna's eagerness to learn more about different cultures has led to her continuous involvement in Model United Nations, which has nurtured her global awareness and strengthened her understanding regarding inter-cultural phenomena. Nearly 40 years ago, before daughter Anna was a twinkle in her eye, Frances Moore Lappé published Diet for a Small Planet. Today, the pair still stand firmly behind this book which started as a one-page handout and would become the foundation of Annas own life's work stressing that to understand world politics, we need first to understand food. Anna Lappé, one of Time's "Eco- Who's Who," argues that there's an unsettling connection between food production and global warming in her latest, Diet for a Hot Planet. The mother and daughter have traveled far and wide and conclude that "hunger is not caused by a scarcity of food but by a scarcity of democracy." They encourage us to recognize food as a powerful starting point for solving one of our planet's biggest problems.
