Green Energy Futures caught up with Dr. Wörlen in Edmonton, Alberta when she was there to speak at City Hall and Grant MacEwan University about the German Renewable Energy Revolution.  interview and talk were recorded by the Green Energy Futures project in September 2011.

Fariha, 23, invested in a business with a $500 micro-grant from the Non-Formal Approach to Training, Education and Jobs in Afghanistan (NATEJA) project which supports aspiring entrepreneurs and creates private sector job. The project provides funding, mentoring, business counseling support and trains micro-entrepreneurs in business, accounting, and marketing in rural of Afghanistan. To date, about 2,500 micro-entrepreneurs (30 percent are women entrepreneurs) have been selected from 17,000 applicants in Kabul, Nangarhar and Balkh provinces. The project is implemented by the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled.

We all have times when we try to restrict what we consume – whether it’s deleting social media apps from phones, spending less time online shopping or maybe giving up sugar. Ferrill, a staff member in DePaul’s Department of English, shares her first-hand experience placing limits on something that’s present in almost every aspect of daily life in her talk, “What I learned the year I tried to give up plastic.” In 2015, Ferrill challenged herself to give up plastic over concern about how the material harms our environment. Any piece of plastic that she could not avoid, she would keep. For a year, as she struggled to live plastic free, she documented her experiences in a blog called dumpingplastic.com. The idea was sparked during a first-year writing class she taught at DePaul University. Today, Ferrill is the assistant director of graduate programs and department operations in DePaul’s Department of English. Previously, she worked as a grant writer in Chicago and for a nonprofit in Honduras. In 2015, Ferrill challenged herself to give up plastic over concern about how the material harms our environment. Any piece of plastic that she could not avoid, she would keep. For a year, as she struggled to live plastic free, she documented her experiences in a blog called dumpingplastic.com. As a high school student in drought stricken Reno, Nevada, Celeste Tinajero couldn’t bear to sit idly by as her school’s outdated toilets and faucets leaked water day in and day out. So in her sophomore year Tinajero — who from an early age had been deeply influenced by her mother’s waste conscious and socially responsible values — rallied her peers to send a $12,000 grant proposal to the nonprofit GREENevada (Growing Resources for Environmental Education in Nevada) seeking to renovate Reed High School’s bathrooms. Tinajero and Reed High School were awarded the grant in 2011 to install new technology in the school’s bathrooms, including low flush toilets, auto-sensor lights, and automatic hand dryers and faucets. Motivated by the victory, Tinajero tackled another issue plaguing her school — single use plastic bottles. In 2012, her high school was awarded another $3,500 grant to cover the cost of installing a “hydration station” where students could refill their water bottles. However, the school building was old and its walls contained asbestos which needed to be removed before the hydration station could be installed. To cover the cost of this involved, Tinajero and her schoolmates raised funds by selling reusable water bottles at the school’s annual “Reedstock” festival. Tinajero graduated from Reed in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of driven change-making. Today she continues to help create positive change in Reno by designing curriculum on sustainable living for local schools and by working as a lead researcher for the Reno “Bag the Ban” campaign against plastic bags.
