Wildfires are distressing, yet a biocentric perspective reveals they are primarily climate-driven, not fuel-driven. This means landscape-scale forest thinning and prescribed burns are largely ineffective at reducing fire spread or intensity, a view supported by experts like George Wuerthner.

Fires are often used as an excuse for logging, whether for "fuels management" or "salvage." However, burned forests are vital carbon sinks and biodiverse habitats that should be allowed to recover naturally, as logging is detrimental.

Join Jeff Corwin as he explores climate change impacts, from California's drought-stricken Sierra Nevada and the Caldor Fire's aftermath, where he meets firefighters, to Washington State. There, he highlights conservation efforts for the resourceful American beaver and the endangered Pygmy rabbit.

In Washington, Corwin joins the Tulalip Beaver Project, which humanely relocates beavers from conflict areas. Beavers are vital ecosystem engineers, building dams that increase water storage, filter pollutants, promote biodiversity, and create crucial salmon habitat. Nearly hunted to extinction, these resilient animals are now recovering, with the Tulalip Tribal Community leading successful wildlife management and research efforts.

Join Jeff Corwin on "Wildlife Nation" as he explores critical conservation challenges. He journeys to California's Sierra Nevada mountains to witness the devastating effects of drought and the Caldor Fire, meeting brave firefighters on the frontlines of climate change.

Corwin then travels to Washington State, working alongside conservationists to protect vital and threatened species: the resourceful American beaver and the endangered Pygmy rabbit. He highlights efforts to save these animals and their ecosystems. For more information, visit Defenders of Wildlife. Check local listings for showtimes.

As climate change worsens wildfires in the American West, National Geographic photographer Kiliii Yuyan introduces Indigenous groups in the Klamath Basin. They are reviving cultural burning practices, ancient methods that effectively controlled fires for centuries, offering a crucial way to mitigate catastrophic events.

Join the NHI Speaker Series for "The Brothers Boutelou and the Grass they Barely Knew" with Debbie DeWolf Allen. This talk explores the fascinating origin of the genus name for Blue Grama Grass, *Bouteloua gracilis*. While botanical names often describe plants, some honor individuals. Discover the tale behind Bouteloua, intertwining two 18th-century Spanish gardeners, an enlightened king, a New World expedition, and botanical drawings lost for nearly 200 years.

Debbie DeWolf Allen, a Master Gardener and author of "Common Grasses of the Central Arizona Highlands," will guide this journey through botany, history, and exploration. Her field guide is available at the Natural History Institute.

This event highlights key messages from the IPCC's 6th Assessment Report on Climate Change: Physical Science Basis, with a specific focus on Africa.

IPCC authors will present observed and projected climate change signals across the African continent, including specific insights for the nine IPCC African regions and the West African Monsoon. The event will feature a Q&A breakout session for regional discussions and a demonstration of the interactive Atlas.

Retired four-star U.S. Army General Stanley McChrystal, drawing on combat experience and work with business leaders, highlights a critical flaw in risk mitigation: focusing only on probability, not the management interface.

His new book, *Risk: A User’s Guide*, co-authored with Anna Butrico, offers a battle-tested system. It proposes a "risk immune system" through ten dimensions of control, enabling proactive anticipation and action against unforeseen challenges. Join General McChrystal to master the unknown.

Despite strong evidence and technical solutions, our planet is moving "beyond its limits" due to climate change. In her talk, Astghine Pasoyan discusses why this is happening and what can be done to drive sustainable green transformation.

Pasoyan is a sustainable energy expert, project manager, trainer, and policy advocate with over two decades of experience in CEE and CIS, including multi-million fundraising. She has authored numerous papers and managed significant legal reforms and strategies in energy efficiency and renewable energy across multiple countries. A graduate of Brown University and Yerevan State Economic University, her insights are invaluable.

Join us for an exclusive talk with journalist and political strategist Jasmyne Cannick. Following wealthy socialite Ed Buck's conviction for crimes including the deaths of Gemmel Moore and Timothy Dean, Cannick stated, "Ed Buck is going to pay for the crimes he committed...to an entire community of Black men here." Her persistence was crucial in bringing this sordid story to light.

Cannick founded Justice for Gemmel and All of Ed Buck’s Victims, extending her advocacy beyond journalism. She co-founded My Hood Votes and the National Black Justice Coalition, the nation's largest Black LGBTQ civil rights organization. This event is presented by The Commonwealth Club of California, the nation's oldest and largest public affairs forum, established in 1903.

Geothermal energy, despite lower carbon emissions than coal, is not benign. Projects like Nevada's proposed Baltazor site highlight significant environmental and social costs. Geothermal development leads to habitat destruction (e.g., in Kenya and for Nevada's Dixie Valley toad) and violent evictions of indigenous communities.

Drilling releases toxic elements like mercury, arsenic, and boron into groundwater. Facilities also cause air pollution, including sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, contributing to acid rain and health issues, as seen in Iceland. Moreover, "enhanced geothermal systems" (EGS) utilize fracking technology, injecting high-pressure slurries that can poison groundwater and induce earthquakes, mirroring problems in the oil and gas industry.
