This talk explores the fascinating origin of the genus name for Blue Grama Grass, *Bouteloua gracilis*. While botanical names often describe plants, some honor individuals. Discover the tale behind Bouteloua, intertwining two 18th-century Spanish gardeners, an enlightened king, a New World expedition, and botanical drawings lost for nearly 200 years.

Debbie DeWolf Allen, a Master Gardener and author of "Common Grasses of the Central Arizona Highlands," will guide this journey through botany, history, and exploration. Her field guide is available at the Natural History Institute.

This environmental degradation contributes to a severe crisis for salmon and steelhead across Washington, Oregon, and California.

Hundreds of salmonid populations have been destroyed, and remaining ones are critically endangered, with Pacific salmon numbers down by 98-99%. Urgent action is vital for their survival: protect forests by stopping industrial logging, remove dams and restore aquatic habitats, halt commercial fishing and pollution, and stabilize global warming.
