All the authors’ proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Water.org. On any given morning, you might wake up and shower with water, make your coffee with water, flush your toilet with water—and think nothing of it. But around the world, more than three-quarters of a billion people can’t do any of that—because they have no clean water source near their homes. And 1.7 billion don’t have access to a toilet. This crisis affects a third of the people on the planet. It keeps kids out of school and women out of work. It traps people in extreme poverty and it spreads disease. It’s also solvable. That conviction is what brought together movie actor Matt Damon and water expert and engineer Gary White. Over time, they and their organization, Water.org, have found an approach that works. Working with partners across East Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, they’ve helped over 40 million people access water and/or sanitation. About the Panelists Matt Damon is the cofounder of Water.org and WaterEquity, as well as an actor, a producer, and a screenwriter. In 2006 he founded H20 Africa Foundation to raise awareness about water initiatives on the continent. Matt’s active participation in the work of Water.org and WaterEquity has positioned him as one of the world’s experts on water and sanitation issues. Gary White is the cofounder and CEO of Water.org and WaterEquity. In 1991 he launched Water Partners, now the international NGO known as Water.org. Today he leads two organizations in creating and executing market-driven solutions to the global water crisis, driving innovations in the way water and sanitation projects are delivered and financed. The current framing of renewable energy goals creates a perverse disincentive for organizations seeking to be “powered by” 100% renewable electricity to NOT deploy rooftop solar or support community solar projects in their jurisdiction, but instead, buy renewable energy certificates that are 5-years old, not a part of their local electric grid, and/or do not make the electric system any cleaner. A change in mindset, such as that being adopted by the City and County of Denver, will unlock hundred of millions of dollars of annual investments that should be reallocated towards solutions that enable the physical operation of a 100% renewable electric grid and the decarbonization of the systems we are a part of. A more thoughtful investment of these resources will enable co-benefits such as local workforce development, utility bill savings, and more resilient buildings and facilities. Jonathan Rogers is the Renewable Energy Specialist for the City and County of Denver. He is responsible for the city's efforts to transition to a 100% renewable electricity system by 2030. Mr. Rogers leads Denver’s advocacy at the public utilities commission and coordinates Denver's Energy Future Collaboration with Xcel Energy. He works with stakeholders across city agencies to develop and implement renewable-energy focused policies, programs, and projects that advance Denver’s clean energy and community empowerment objectives. Before joining Denver, Mr. Rogers was Program Director of Energy Systems Analysis and Integration at Energetics Incorporated, advising the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. National Laboratories, and state and local governments on efforts to achieve an affordable and equitable energy transition. Mr. Rogers holds both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Johns Hopkins University.
